Words from our manager

What a busy and exiting time we have been having!

We secured funding from Skills for Care to develop and deliver two projects; one to Support Direct Payment Recipients and their Personal Carers through improved contact and learning opportunities.  The other working with the Severn Hospice to develop and deliver learning programs in End of Life Care, with additional funding from Health Education West Midlands to make this available to a wider audience, including health professionals and ward staff from Shrewsbury & Telford Hospitals.  These are just 2 examples of the new work recently undertaken.

My team is currently working hard to meet the challenges and changes to MCA & DoLS, the new Care Act, the new MAPA® model, the change from CIS to Care Certificate, and the new focus on services for Adults with Learning Disabilities.  We welcome the opportunity to continue to work with you to develop the knowledge and skills to meet the needs of people requiring health and care support.

A big thank you to our funding partners and customers for your continued support and from me to the team for all your hard work in making all this happen!

Kindest regards

Christine

Sad News

We are saddened to tell you that our dear friend and colleague Josephine Brett-Summors passed away in August following a short illness.  Josie worked as a social worker then development officer for Shropshire Council for 21 years.  Josie was always the professional; bold, compassionate and an advocate for fairness.   Josie will be missed by many and our thoughts are with all those who will be saddened by this news

Trinity Centre, Meole Brace, Shrewsbury 9.00am – 4.00pm

Phoebe Caldwell

Phoebe is a practitioner in Intensive Interaction, working with children and adults on the autistic spectrum.  She has over 30 years' experience as a practitioner with people whose severe learning disabilities are linked with behavioral distress.  She was a Rowntree Research Fellow for four years.  She trains professionals, therapists, managers, practitioners, parents and carers in the approach known as Intensive Interaction.  This exciting opportunity will give you an insight into communication when supporting adults on the Autistic Spectrum.  The event cost is £50 per person (family carers in Shropshire Council area free of charge) and is appropriate to anyone supporting Adults on the Autistic Spectrum or wishing to learn more about this subject.  A light lunch will be provided.  Applications for this event are very welcome and can be made by clicking on the green button at the end of this newsletter.

The Care Act 2014

The Care Act introduces reforms to the legal framework for adult care and support in England - to the duties of local authorities; to the rights of those in need of care and support; and to the funding system for care and support.

This act has bought together over 50 years of advisory good practice into law.

The broad brush strokes of good practice that Joint Training has advocated within it’s training for many years is now endorsed by law.

Wellbeing, spirituality and the value of person centred care have all gained royal assent just a few months ago.

Social Care Institute for Excellence and Skills for Care have provided resources, reading materials and toolkits on how you can implement principles of the Care Act into your organisation.
