Volunteer Opportunity - Mass Decontamination Exercise
Mass Decontamination Exercise
Saturday 2nd August 2014, 10:00am – 12:30pm Shrewsbury Town Football Club, Greenhous Meadow, Shrewsbury
A joint mass decontamination exercise is taking place on the 2nd August 2014 at Shrewsbury Town Football Club.
We are looking to recruit around 100 volunteers to play the part of spectators requiring specialist decontamination by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service following the release of an unknown hazardous substance.
Volunteers will be required to act as if they have been contaminated by an unknown substance and will be taken to decontamination tents which will be set up on the car park of the Greenhous Meadow.
The process will involve you entering a showering unit and you will be required to wear swimwear (or shorts and t-shirt that you don’t mind getting wet) underneath your clothing.
If you are interested in participating, please complete and return the attached volunteer form to: Nicola.wall@shropshire.gov.uk and we will be in touch in the next few weeks to confirm the joining instructions for the day.
Deadline for submission is Friday 15th August 2014.
If you would like to discuss any issues or questions you may have regarding the consultation, please contact us at the following email address: help2change@shropshire.gov.uk
With kind regards

Cabinet Office are consulting on a proposed sustainability fund to support effective voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations. The fund will provide medium-sized organisations with the support they need to plan for the long term and begin to move to sustainable business models. The fund will be open to applications in 2015 and will look particularly at supporting organisations working with the most vulnerable and disadvantaged members of society.
They aim to work openly on developing the fund and want people and organisations to give their views to help design and implement it, and are interested in hearing from:
frontline VCSE organisations
VCSE sector membership and infrastructure organisations
funders and providers of business-development support to the sector

Are we making progress? Survey for people with dementia, carers and local members.
Background
To mark the fourth year of the National Dementia Declaration the Dementia Action Alliance is surveying people affected by dementia and professionals supporting them to find out whether current activity is leading to real changes on the ground.
The survey was drafted by University of Worcester with the aim of producing one survey that all LDAAs could use rather than each producing bespoke surveys. Anonymised results will be passed back to LDAAs to use as baseline data and information on the local needs and priorities of people affected by dementia.
The survey can be completed in 10-30 minutes depending on how long you spend on each question. The online survey has a filter with different questions for people affected by dementia and professionals. They are based on the objectives of the National Dementia Strategy and ‘I’ statements from the National Dementia Declaration.
To Action
It would be much appreciated if you could promote the survey within your Local DAAs and quarterly meetings, including amongst people affected by dementia that your members are working with. We are also happy to receive multiple responses from same organisations. You can access the survey online here. The closing date is 9am on Monday 8th September.
Batches of hard copies can be posted out if a memory café or service in your area would like to complete it en masse.
The DAA is promoting this survey through a variety mediums including direct emails to all members registered on the website so they will likely receive this request more than once.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me on the details given below.
The DMWS is a voluntary organisation formed by The Red Cross and St John’s Ambulance in 1943. Through our teams of Welfare Officers we provide 24/7 medical welfare service to service personnel and their families, including reservists and veterans, when they are in hospital, hospice, rehabilitation or recovery. New Healthy Shropshire Website
A newly-revamped health website has been launched to help Shropshire residents lead healthier lifestyles:
The launch coincides with national Health Information Week (Monday 7 July to Sunday 13 July 2014) which aims to improve access to quality local information and promote healthier communities.
Healthy Shropshire aims to provide a single point of access to simplify signposting and improve access to both public and health professionals. It provides a wealth of information on support available to help those wanting to make those positive changes to their health. These include:
The new-look website, relaunched by Shropshire Council’s public health team, features extra content and is designed to be easier to use. Information now covers all ages, from early years, through childhood, adulthood and later life. Topics includes immunisations, ageing well, pregnancy and sexual health.
It also provides resources for professionals, as well as leaflets on a variety of health topics which people can download.
Karen Calder, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for health, said:
“Our revamped website has received a fantastic makeover and now offers even more information to help people make positive changes to their lifestyles.
“We hope Healthy Shropshire will act as a one stop shop of health information for both local residents and health professionals. I really encourage people to take a look and see for themselves the support available.”
Healthy Shropshire includes a directory which enables you to find local NHS and other services in your area, and provides a search facility. The website also connects you to national websites and related local websites, providing the best advice and resources to help you lead a healthier lifestyle. This includes video clips, downloadable apps, online programmes, as well as top tips.
Miranda Ashwell, programme lead for physical activity in Shropshire Council’s public health, added:
“Healthy Shropshire also offers information for people who may have become inactive through ill health, age-related conditions, or who have never enjoyed formal exercise or sport with local exercise and activity providers. People can find a range of activities in their area in our directory, including ‘start up’ classes and groups which are great for supporting the less active to get moving more.”
You can also find out the latest news on local events, projects and activities.
If you do not have Internet access, Healthy Shropshire information is also available from our helpline number 0345 678 9025. This number has been set up to provide a single point for people to go to for support with improving their health. Advisers can help people looking to find out more about how they can be healthier, and prevent themselves or others from getting ill.
Shropshire Walk-in Centre
Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) buys NHS health services on behalf of Shropshire people. This includes the ‘walk-in element’ of care provided at the Shropshire Walk-in Centre in Monkmoor.
The contract for the ‘walk-in’ element of care at the Centre comes to an end later this year and the CCG, working closely with colleagues at the Walk-in Centre and The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, is looking at the possibility of moving the walk-in element of care from Monkmoor so that it is co-located with the Accident & Emergency Department on the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) site. These plans have been supported this week by the Shropshire Health and Adult Social Care Scrutiny Committee. The plans do not include the registered GP patient service available at the Centre. Registered GP services are the responsibility of another NHS organisation, NHS England, and would remain at the GP surgery in Monkmoor.
