Eat Better, Move More

What is Eat Better, Move More?

Eat Better, Move More is a Shropshire wide obesity prevention project aiming to enhance the skills and knowledge of those working with or supporting young children and families. It has two key topics; healthy eating and physical activity.
The project aims to provide consistent health messages in line with current,  evidence-based national guidance and ultimately support children and families overall health and well-being.

How was Eat Better, Move More developed?

Public Health developed the 'Eat Better, Move More for Early Years’ programme by working with the Children’s Food Trust and The British Heart Foundation National Centre. The programme offers training and support to early years settings to create innovative ways to encourage more young children to eat a healthy, balanced and nutritional diet and engage in enjoyable physical activities throughout the day to further their learning and healthy development. Using both Children’s Food Trust  Food and Drink Guidelines for Early Years Settings and the Chief Medical Officer’s physical activity levels guidance, Start Active, Stay Active, the programme enables settings to assess and develop their own provision and policies in line with national guidance and best practice.  The programme also supports settings to meet the requirements of OFSTED and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

Who are the courses for?

Eat Better, Move More courses are being offered to registered childcare settings through the Early Years CPD programme.

Following a successful 2013 pilot of Eat Better, Move More for Early Years settings, in which 50 providers participated,  Public Health has commissioned the Early Years Education and Childcare Team to roll out the healthy eating and physical activity programme in 2014-15 to a further 60 OFSTED registered early years and childcare providers operating in Shropshire.

Want to take part in training?

There are still spaces on the Early Years CPD training for Eat Better, Move More in September. The training is free of cost for staff working as registered, full-day, childcare providers in OFSTED registered pre-school nurseries, schools and as child-minders. Places are limited to one or two delegates per setting. By attending training delegates are making a commitment to look at and develop their policies and provision, reporting this back to the team.

Settings who complete the training are rewarded at a presentation evening with a framed certificate signed by the Director of Public Health. This shows their commitment to children's healthy development.

For more information and to book your place on a course, please go click here or contact the Early Years CPD Team on 01743 254570 or by emailing: earlyyearscpd@shropshire.gov.uk.
