SEND Snack – Inclusivity
An inclusive Early Years setting reflects the children who attend.
Consider if the books, resources and toys include representation of children with SEND. The curriculum taught should also represent your settings diverse community. Consider how your setting teaches children about SEND including both visible and hidden disabilities such as neurodiversity.
The learning environment should have clear areas of provision. Areas should be clearly defined, labelled with photos and symbols with space to move around. Calm areas and spaces both indoors and out should provide children for a place to regulate should they need it. These could be as simple as introducing a pop-up tent, if space is limited. Children will need to be taught the expectations and how to use these spaces, with some needing support to access them in moments of dysregulation.
A revisit to last week's SEND snack with a reminder of the importance of a visual timetable, clearly displayed and used throughout the day.
And finally, consider the use of adults in the setting. Rotating adults is a valuable thing to do with children not becoming accustomed to having the same 1:1 adult all day, every day. This will prepare for when a member of staff is on holiday, off poorly or leaves. It also enables the children to work with a range of personalities - a key life skill.
