New Mandatory Learning Disability & Autism Training: The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training Standards on Learning Disability and Autism

Oliver McGowan

Oliver was a young man whose death shone a light on the need for health and social care staff to have better skills, knowledge and understanding of the needs for autistic people and people with a learning disability.  The training was developed as a result of Right to be Heard, the Government’s response to the consultation on mandatory training on learning disability and autism.  There is a requirement for CQC registered providers to ensure their employees receive learning disability and autism training appropriate to their role.

Joint Training has been asked by the Integrated Care System for Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin to lead on the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training, funded by Health Education England.  The Policy Guidance is due out in February for consultation, and June as a workable document.  Planning and preparation is taking place with a training programme available in the Spring.

There are two levels of training required:

  • Tier 1 – General awareness with 90 minute eLearning and 60 minute interactive on-line session
  • Tier 2 -  for people who may need to provide care and support to people with a learning disability and autistic people with 90 minute eLearning and 1 day face to face training

For further information see The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism

As soon as we have more information we will promote this widely and make it available to the health and care sector in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin.

Psychosis and the Importance of Early Intervention

We are excited to have a new session for those interested in learning more about psychosis, in particular first episode, available from March 2023. We will explore the basics, including definition, symptoms and risk factors, as well as the importance of early identification, treatment and available support. A half day face to face session, with the opportunity to engage with other teams and organisations, is a fantastic way to consider how we can put our learning into practice, as well as educating on what is available in Shropshire/T&W for support around Psychosis.  For more information please see Psychosis and the importance of Early Intervention

‘Making it Real is a framework for how to do personalised care and support. It’s for people working in health, adult social care, housing, and  for people who access services.  It is an easy to use, jargon-free set of personalised principles that focus on what matters to people. Making it Real is built around six themes. These describe what good looks like from an individual’s perspective and what organisations should be doing to live up to those expectations. It supports co-production between people, commissioners and providers. To read more about Making it Real please visit; https://www.thinklocalactpersonal.org.uk/makingitreal/about/
