Help Shape the
new Extended Hours Service for GP Practices
To help plan longer opening hours for GP practices local people are
being asked how the service may look in a patient survey by Shropshire and Telford
& Wrekin Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs).
The CCGs are preparing plans for all patients to be able to book a
regular, routine appointment at a GP practice from 8am to 8pm, Monday to Friday,
as well as weekends and Bank Holidays.
These appointments would be with a GP, Nurse, or other clinicians e.g. a
Clinical Pharmacist. They may not be at a patient’s own practice, but one
nearby and will just be for routine or same-day, pre-bookable appointments, not
for urgent or emergency appointments.
A survey is being launched for patients so they can help shape the
service. The GP Extended Access Survey is confidential and takes just five
minutes to complete. It has 11 multi-choice questions to help the CCGs find out
who would be interested in the new extended hours service and when people would
be most likely to use it.
The survey also checks how far people would be prepared to travel to
appointments and if they would be interested in using different methods for
appointments such as Skype.
Dr Stephen James, Clinical Director for Primary Care speaking on behalf
of both Shropshire CCG and Telford and Wrekin CCG in this joint project, urged
people to complete a survey.
He said: “We will use the findings of the survey to help shape and plan
the service so it’s important that people take just take a few minutes to give
us some feedback and ideas.
“The patient survey is looking at people’s preferred days and times for
appointment over the evenings, weekends, and Bank Holidays.
“We are also looking at practices working in groups, or hubs, so
although every practice would not be open for the extended hours, people would
not have far to travel to the nearest practice providing this service.”
The survey opens on Monday, 30 April, and closes on Friday, 25 May at
5pm. It is open to all patients over 16 registered with a practice listed with
Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin CCGs.
If you need help completing the survey, or need a paper copy, for

Volunteer vacancies in Shrewsbury
Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin is looking for a
fresh intake of volunteers in and around Shrewsbury to satisfy demand for its
services to support older people.
The local charity is keen to recruit volunteer befrienders
and telephone buddies to provide support to older people experiencing
loneliness. There are also volunteer vacancies in the charity furniture shop
and day centres at Gains Park and Hanwood.
Heather Osborne, Chief Executive of Age UK STW, said: “Our
services could not run without our dedicated team of volunteers who are the
life blood of our charity. Giving up an hour or two of their spare time will
make all the difference to the life of an older person who may be suffering
from loneliness. Our volunteers get a huge amount of satisfaction helping older
people, and our services are in great demand, particularly in Shrewsbury.”
Anyone who is interested in volunteering for Age UK
Shropshire Telford & Wrekin should contact the volunteer recruitment team

BUILD A BENCH
Small
Woods have an opportunity which may be of interest to people you know and / or
support.
Build
a Bench is a fully funded 12-week programme which provides people who live in Telford
and Wrekin and Shropshire who are not currently in any kind of paid work, a
unique opportunity to take part in weekly green wood craft sessions combined
with supportive action planning sessions at the beautiful Green Wood Centre in
Coalbrookdale (near Ironbridge).
The
programme is suitable for all abilities and no previous wood-craft experience
is required. Build a Bench is an outcome focused programme which aims to
prepare people for progression into employment, self-employment, accredited
learning and / or volunteering by the end of the 12-week course.
Participants must therefore
be willing to undertake the craft activity and
engage in action planning and progress reviews focused on moving into
employment, self-employment, accredited learning and / or volunteering.
The programme provides an amazing opportunity for
people to develop new skills, grow in confidence, meet new people and develop
their resilience.
