Welcome
Welcome to this Spring edition of the Joint Training Newsletter. The team continues to be very busy and we have an exciting array of courses on offer, both new and well established. This newsletter gives some insight into our activities.
Joint Training held a very successful cake sale for Comic Relief - we are delighted to report that £232 was raised. Thank you to everyone who contributed by buying our cakes - we hope that they were as delicious as they looked!
We are very pleased to welcome our new Substance Misuse LDO, Vicky Dudley, who joined Joint Training at the end of 2016. Vicky is a qualified social worker of fifteen years standing and brings with her a wealth of experience of substance misuse related issues, having previously managed the Community Substance Misuse Team.
Currently available is a new short course, Introduction to Substance Misuse. This session aims to explore the effects of substance misuse on individuals and provides a firm knowledge base to support good practice. The course is suitable for workers in adult services, including the voluntary and independent sectors, whose main role is not substance misuse but who would like the knowledge to support individuals. Places are filling fast for the session on Wednesday 10th May, 1.30pm to 4.30pm at Shrewsbury Training & Development Centre and the course will be available again on Tuesday 26th September, 9.30am to 12.30pm at the same venue.
Vicky is also developing courses and interventions to meet the Shropshire Council Alcohol Strategy - including a new course on Alcohol in the Community. This course will explore how alcohol affects us, both as individuals and the community as a whole. Again the course is suitable for workers whose main role is not substance misuse, but who want to build knowledge to support individuals. The course is available on Thursday 29th June, 9.30am to 12.30pm and Tuesday 17th October. 1.30pm to 4.30pm at Shrewsbury Training & Development Centre.
To apply for places on either of these new courses please click the green button at the top of this newsletter.
Vicky is also able to offer bespoke training and is very happy to work with organisations to tailor training to their specific needs. For more information on bespoke training please contact either vicky.dudley@shropshire.gov.uk or heather.rowe@shropshire.gov.uk .
MAPA® training programmes are designed to help staff in a variety of settings to deal with aggression in a way that keeps everyone safe.
Opportunities exist for organisations who either already access MAPA® training, or would like to do so, to join the Shropshire Council Approved MAPA® Training Centre (ATC) by providing trainers to deliver MAPA® training. Benefits to your organisation include:
MAPA®
training for staff teams at reduced cost;
Access to a training programme that is internationally recognised and BILD accredited;
A MAPA®
champion within the organisation, trained to support staff and customers to the level required for their workbase;
Being able to network with other care provider organisations and experienced professionals;
Access for Operational MAPA®
trainers to learning opportunities available via the Joint Training Programme free of charge.
MAPA®
is the most widely used behaviour support programme within Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin Health and Social care services, providing the same consistent approach across a wide variety of services.
Operational trainers will be required to
Attend a 'Train the Trainer' programme delivered by the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI), owners of the MAPA®
model. The employing organisation pays for this initial training with the cost of mandatory annual updates paid for by the ATC;
Deliver a minimum of 10 days MAPA®
training per year with a second trainer from the ATC team;
Attend annual update training (2 or 3 days depending on the level of training delivered);
Attend four MAPA®
trainer meetings per year;
Complete the One Day First Aid certificated course and required updates;
Maintain a CPD portfolio and be observed delivering MAPA®
training on an annual basis.
Joint Training recently secured a Skills for Care Innovation Award Grant to fund the development of a Leadership & Managers Learning Programme. Based on a pilot Skills for Care Management Induction Standards workbook the programme provided knowledge on law, current approaches to management and joint problem solving. This gave the opportunity for current and aspiring managers to think about the knowledge, skills and behaviours necessary to become positive role models. The programme was successfully delivered over five days with 28 learners having benefitted from this learning opportunity. Very positive feedback from learners was received with comments including:
"The supervision section today was excellent - I feel more confident and equipped to manage staffing situations in a logical and postive way"
"I have a clearer vision of what is expected in my role and greater understanding of the underlying principles"
"Has identified my communication requirements to work more effectively in the team"
"Enabled me to manage the workplace better and think differently in the way that I manage staff"
"It was all relevant to my job role and listening to others' scenarios was really interesting"
It is our intention to review this pilot course and run it again in Autumn 2017. Further details will be circulated as they become available.
A new guide is available to support employers to identify when their workforce should or must refresh their learning and how this can be effectively achieved.
Funding has been secured to deliver SAGE & THYME, a model developed
by Salford University Hospital Trust to provide training on communication with people who are
distressed.Six trainers are in the process of being
trained, two from Joint Training, and two each from SaTH and the Severn Hospice. Our first priority is to train 100 volunteers from the hospice.The course will then be available on a
rolling programme across the sector.

Palliative
Management in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease COPD
In January we
held our first workshop to improve understanding, diagnosis and management of
COPD at end of life.
We welcomed Dr
Bob Wilson, Respiratory Consultant, Respiratory Resource Centre Shrewsbury, Dr
Alice O’Connor, Severn Hospice supporting GPs / Primary Care Staff, Dr Fiona
Hay, GP with special interest in palliative care and Tony Roberts, Physiotherapist
in pulmonary rehabilitation. These professionals all shared their vast
knowledge and expertise around improving responses when working with people
with COPD. We also welcomed an expert by lived experience and his wife
who generously shared their personal experience with the learners attending the
workshop bringing an extra dimension to the learning experience. There
were 60 learners who benefitted from this workshop. When responding to the evaluation
question; How will this workshop change your practice and what will you do
differently, responses included “I have only been in Shropshire for a short time - this course
has enabled me to understand the support network for COPD in the county -
enabling me to refer accurately and support appropriately.” “Need to think more
holistically - promote pulmonary rehab. Focus more on psychology and support
alongside symptom control. Consider oxygen prescribing more carefully and
realistically. Has made me view COPD very differently.” These are just two examples of
the comments we received. We want to thank all who presented
information and participated in the discussions which made this a rich and
informative afternoon and our Local Workforce Action Board, Health Education
for funding this event.
This course is provided by the British Institute of Learning Disabilities (BILD) to promote positive behaviour support. The concept helps to impove the quality of life of people who can display behaviours of concern.
