Welcome
Welcome to what has been a very busy time for Joint Training! As many readers will know we moved offices in May and are now settled in our new offices at the Ptarmigan Building on Shrewsbury Business Park. We have also introduced a new booking system for course enrolments and continue to run a very busy programme of courses.
In April, fifty seven learners and managers attended an enjoyable Recognition of Learning & Evaluation Event at the Trinity Centre, Meole Brace. The event recognised the achievements of learners who had completed the new Care Certificate and Awards or Certificates accredited by City & Guilds or ProQual in the past 18 months and explored the impact this had on their knowledge and behaviours.
When asked to comment on their new knowledge and skills, learners responded very positively noting how they had changed their practice, saying:
'I have helped families prepare for the future and to be as positive as possible. Fantastic course!' (Stroke Award)
'Challenging GPs about advanced care planning, DNR forms. Improved my confidence with end of life care' (End of Life Award)
'The person centred approach has been the foundation for establishing our new Dementia cafes and this template will be used to teach new and existing staff' (Dementia Award)
Andy Begley - Director of Adult Services, Councillor Lee Chapman - Porfolio Holder for Adult Services, David Williams - Skills for Care Area Officer, Garry Kirlew - Lecturer/Practitioner Severn Hospice and Heather Pitchford - Workforce Development Specialist Health Education England joined us at the event offering support and their congratulations to learners.
The Five Principles of the MCA (for Service Users)
Our Five Principles of the MCA cards have been designed in partnership with self advocates from
Taking Part Shropshire and Mary Johnson, Learning and Development Officer in
the Joint Training team. These plain language cards are to help people to understand their rights under the Mental Capacity Act.
Please have a look and use them to inform and support
people who may lack capacity either now or in the future.
Film
Joint Training and Taking Part have also been involved in a new short film about the MCA which has been launched on the SCIE website. It features a wide range of people talking about how the MCA has helped them to have a voice - please have a look at it, share it, and use it in your work.

30th January 2017 at Ludlow Conference Centre
This new 3 hour workshop is designed to give an improved understanding of Parkinson's and is relevant to all levels of staff working with people affected by this condition. The course will give a better understanding of the needs of people living with and caring for those with Parkinson's, identify the challenges associated with the symptoms, side effects of medication and myths surrounding Parkinson's and consider the resources available to improve the quality of life of those with Parkinson's and their carers.
Stroke Aware
29th November 2016 at Severnfields Health Village, Shrewsbury
8th March 2017 at Ludlow Conference Centre
These 3 hour workshops are designed for staff in health and social care settings who work with people who have had a stroke. The workshops will give a better understanding and awareness of what stroke and TIA are; the signs and symptoms; risk factors and prevention campaigns; the wide-ranging impact of stroke and vascular disease; impact on the family and carers of those affected and communication after stroke.
Personal
Safety at Work training is appropriate to workers not involved in direct care,
e.g. administration staff, leisure services, transport, housing, maintenance
etc. The course aims to equip learners with the knowledge and skills to
enable them to respond to work situations safely and effectively.
Learners will gain an understanding of the legislation relevant to this
topic; the role of values in relation to challenging situations; strategies to
promote safe practice; skills appropriate to the workplace; risk assessment and
reasonable force, and their role in personal safety and lone working. The
course cost is £50 including a workbook. As this is a MAPA® course access
is via a Training Needs Analysis form completed by the line manager. Personal
Safety at Work training is available throughout the year - please contact Heather Rowe for more information.

Following the successful launch of its Befriending Service in Lincolnshire last December, the Royal Air Forces Association has extended the reach of the service to cover the whole UK. The service was created in response to research published by the Royal British Legion showing that isolation and loneliness is particularly acute within the ex-service community, with one in six reporting some relationship/isolation difficulty. Further information on the Befriending Service is available by calling 0800 0182 361 or by emailing welfare@rafa.org.uk.
We would like to remind customers of
changes in our booking process and charging policy that took effect from
the 1st June 2016.
Booking Process
This has been simplified -
Your place will be confirmed by email four weeks before the course date - the assumption is that you will be attending and there is no longer a need submit a form to confirm your attendance.
If you are not able to attend it is your responsibility to notify us as
soon as possible, and at least 7 days before the course date– see
revised non-attendance charges below.
Charging Policy – Non-attendance
Charges
The management of non-attendance and short notice
cancellation remains firmly within your own workplace.
You will be charged the stated course fee for non-attendance, unless you cancel the place at least 7 days prior to the course date.
This policy will be strictly applied and the
charge will not be waived (applies
to paid and unpaid learners).
Exemptions: Health workers from SSS NHS FT,
Shropshire CCG and Shropshire Community Health Trust where own organisational policies apply.
These changes have been put into place to maximise
attendance and make the most of our limited resources.
