Welcome back to Lauren Short, Learning & Development Officer (MAPA Lead) having returned from maternity leave into her new role.
We are also very pleased to welcome our new Learning & Development Officer (Mental Health lead), Wendy Brook. Wendy has a wealth of experience and expertise from working with mental health services across Shropshire. Keep an eye out for the new learning opportunities that Wendy will provide!
The Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) has awarded Jade Matravers a Master Level Certified Instructor Certificate in recognition of her achievements and on-going commitment to the values of Care, Welfare, Safety and Security. Jade is one of a team of trainers who deliver MAPA® (Managing actual and potential aggression) training in Shropshire and we are very proud of her achievement.
In August 2015 the Department of Health published a paper detailing work which had been undertaken in the previous twelve months towards not only raising awareness and understanding of the MCA itself, but of driving a culture change where individuals who may lack capacity are treated with the dignity and respect all of us expect. The report highlighted a number of initiatives including Case Study 11 on how Shropshire Council, with Taking Part Advocacy, designed and piloted a course to provide service users with learning disabilities with the same information as their carers. The full report can be seen on the Social Care Institute for Excellence website.
The MCA Team and Joint Training have been approached by the Department of Health to be involved in the development of a ground breaking film around the Mental Capacity Act. Individuals with learning disabilities who have received training around mental capacity are directly involved, talking about their stories and feelings around the 5 Principles of the Act. Taking Part Advocacy have supported them with their experiences. The filming will take place in February and will then be available through the Social Care Institute for Excellence site. We will keep you posted.

We work closely with the Severn
Hospice, Health Education West Midlands HEWM and County Trainings Care
Assessment to develop and deliver End of Life Care Accredited learning
programmes. This strong and effective
working relationship supports learners from across the care and health sector
in Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin to achieve awards @ levels 2 & 3 and
the certificate @ level 5 in End of Life Care.
The success of the project and
achievements of the learners has enabled us to secure sufficient funding from
HEWM to provide the programmes as fully funded learning routes. Learner’s
knowledge and competency has been evidenced in their workbooks and portfolios
these have been described by City & Guilds as excellent. This supports the provision of appropriate
and sensitive services at the end of life.
To date the following has been
achieved:
98 learners have
completed @ Level 2
31 learners have
completed @ level 3
7 learners have
