Care Certificate Launch
Since 1st April this year, all new starters in the Care and Health Sector are required to complete the Care Certificate. A launch of the new Joint Training Care Certificate programme took place on 21st April 2015 at the Lantern Centre. Forty eight Provider Managers attended to learn how this will support them in inducting new starters. Liz Evans, the lead development officer for this work provided a comprehensive overview of the requirements for the Care Certificate and how Joint Training can support provider organisations. For more information on the content of this programme contact Elizabeth.evans@shropshire.gov.uk .
Joint Training will be delivering a rolling programme for the Care Certificate with five courses running from May to December 2015, with 25 places per session. Each course will consist of five days learning/mentoring plus First Aid. To book places for your new starters please contact sue.iley@shropshire.gov.uk .
Care Act 2014
This new Act replaces previous legislation and promotes new ways of thinking in the delivery of health and care services. It focuses on a Wellbeing principle and sets out new duties for local authorities, alongside new assessment and eligibility criteria. The Care Act came into effect 1st April 2015 and all organisations working in health and care will require some level of knowledge. In conjunction with our Professional Development Unit colleagues, we are now providing a range of learning options to support implementation of the Act. For further information and details of the courses available please contact joint.training@shropshire.gov.uk .
Mary Johnson shines on the shores of Australia!
Mary Johnson, our Adult Learning Disability & MCA/DoLS Lead has just returned from Brisbane where she was the keynote speaker at a two day support workers conference hosted by two of Queensland's largest disability service organisations and the Queensland Government's Centre of Excellence for Clinical Innovation and Behaviour Support . Mary's input on Personalisation and Individual Budgets was very well received, with some learners changing workshops in order to attend her session and at least one person attending twice! Mary took with her a CD with video clips of our Experts by Experience to give real life examples of how the approach has worked in Shropshire. Thank you to Stuart D, Clair and Stuart J who kindly agreed to star in the CD and to Mike in IT Services for his editing expertise. Mary enjoyed the opportunity to share her experience with this new audience and is pictured delivering one of her sessions.
Autism Event Shropshire: Supporting People with ASD in a Meaningful Way
This recent event provided an exciting opportunity to learn from Phoebe Caldwell, the nationally recognised expert practitioner and author in the field of autism. The day was very well supported with more than 50 health and social care professionals, family carers and service users in attendance. Very positive feedback was received, with some describing the event as the best training they had ever attended and family carers commenting on the very useful ideas that Phoebe had given them to try.
Although this was a one-off event Joint Training provides regular Autism Awareness training sessions delivered by Mary Johnson, Staff Development Officer and Stuart Jones, Expert by Experience, which are also extremely popular. The next session will be held on 16th June 2015, 9.30am to 1.00pm at the Shropshire Wildlife Trust - limited places are still available.
Dementia Awareness Week: 18 - 24 May 2015
Dementia Awareness Week takes place from 18th to 24th May which provides a timely opportunity to remind you of the range of Dementia related courses offered by Joint Training, which include:
Dementia Awareness
Dementia & Learning Disability
Dementia - Meaningful Activities for People with Dementia
Dementia Capable Care: Behaviours (part of the MAPA®
range of courses - access is via a training needs analysis completed by line manager)
Mental Capacity Awareness Training for individuals with Learning Disabilities
Designed and first delivered in August 2014, this course was developed to empower people by increasing their knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act - the rationale being that individuals have a right to know the guiding principles of the Act.
Delivered and facilitated by Mary Johnson, Joint Training, in partnership with Taking Part Advocacy Service, the first cohort of learners were from a group of self-advocates.
The course followed the same areas of learning that staff cover on MCA Awareness with the learners evaluating the event to confirm the level of their understanding and knowledge.
"As I find it hard to get the language and different meanings of MCA the card matching exercise worked well for me"
"I liked the real life examples that made it make sense to me"
"Professionals have to use it because of the law"
The course has been submitted as a good practice example to the Social Care Institute for Excellence and has received positive comments from the Department of Health, with Niall Fry, Lead for MCA commenting, 'looks great - happy to profile it when appropriate in a national update'.
Two further courses are scheduled to train individuals and support staff together. If you are interested in future dates or booking a bespoke course please contact mary.johnson@shropshire.gov.uk.
