Our new look
You may notice we have given our newsletter a fresh and vibrant makeover to make it more engaging and user-friendly. We will be using this branding on all things relating to the Sheffield City Council Gleadless Valley Regeneration Team. We were able to come up with these designs with the help of partners in Gleadless Valley, a big shout out to them!
Important Updates
The Masterplan for the Valley focuses on 4 areas:
- shared and green spaces
- housing
- employment and skills
- services and facilities
Some of the projects The Gleadless Valley Regeneration Team are working on at the moment involve:
Shared and green spaces
The team are looking at what can be provided on 2 areas of green space in the Valley. Once we have some options to share with the community we will be asking for your feedback. The 2 areas are:
Hemsworth
This is an area of green space located at the top end of Gleadless Valley, which is currently being used as an open space and football pitch. Options for this site will include enhancing the football provision and more play equipment.
Spotswood
This is an area of green open space in front of the Holy Cross Church. Options for this site will include wildflower planting, and improvement to the appearance of the site.
Housing
We have been working hard to form a detailed plan to enable the Council to begin the delivery of building works across Gleadless Valley. Unfortunately, Sheffield City Council is not exempt from challenges faced by rising inflation which has had a significant impact on the cost of building works and the Councils budget. However, we are keen to consider ways of moving the building work forward. As a result of this we need to look at our phasing plan, and the timings of when building activities will take place.
We are still planning for the building work previously outlined in the Masterplan to go ahead and a revised timeline for phased works is currently being developed and will be shared with you at the earliest opportunity. Please be reassured that the Gleadless Valley Regeneration Team is looking at all available options and once these have been fully explored and agreed we will provide updates through our newsletter and website.
Employment and skills
The Gleadless Valley Regeneration Team have been working with local schools to develop classes for pupils to learn about regeneration and how they can help shape the future of Gleadless Valley. We hope to start delivering these sessions in schools over the coming months.
The Gleadless Valley Regeneration Team is working closely with schools, colleges, universities and the DWP to look at what training and education and employment options can be delivered and accessed across the valley.
Services and facilities
The two shopping precincts in Gleadless Valley, Gaunt Shopping Precinct and Newfield Green, have not been identified for development as part of the masterplan, but the Gleadless Valley Regeneration Team recognises that general improvements need to be made to both sites to ensure they are welcoming and aesthetically pleasing.
We are currently looking at what is needed in these two shopping areas.
Leading Regeneration in the Valley Together
On 6th September we welcomed over 60 partners to the Terry Wright Hall to share their diverse range of knowledge, skills and ideas from across Gleadless Valley and celebrate the incredible work that is already being carried out across the estate. We would like to thank all of our partners including: Heeley Trust, Gleadless Valley Litter Pickers, Universities, Schools, Gleadless Valley TARA, Regather, Sheffield United F.C Community Foundation and many more.
We had guest speakers from Heeley Trust who run a variety of projects in Gleadless Valley and Heeley including digital skills, community development work, volunteer support and much more.
We also heard from Sheffield United Football Club Community Foundation who run a variety of activities for all ages to empower people to live a healthier, happier life.
Debbie Baggaley, Landlord of the Blackstock Road pub gave a fantastic speech about what regeneration means to her as a resident and a business owner in the area.

TARA AGM
The team attended the Gleadless Valley TARA AGM on the 27th July. It was great to speak to residents at this event and update them on what we are up to in person. We will continue to attend the TARA AGMs to provide in-person updates and answer any questions you may have.
Making homes in Sheffield warmer this winter
The new Housing Energy Efficiency Team want to let you know about the energy efficiency schemes that are currently running in Sheffield. Whether it’s simple energy advice or a free installation of the latest heat pump technology, energy efficiency improvements help local people to stay warmer and safer over the winter. Living in a warm home is important for physical and mental health, as well as helping to combat mould and damp. It’s also an excellent way to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. You can make referrals for people you work with, or make an application for your own home.
To give you an idea of what kind of support is on offer, here is a quick overview of some of the great schemes that can be accessed through Warm Homes Sheffield:
LEAP: free energy advice home visits, including advice about ventilation and free low-energy lightbulbs for people who meet broad income, age or health eligibility criteria. LEAP advisors can refer and signpost to energy efficiency schemes, emergency boiler replacements, debt advice services and more.
HUG 2: free solar panels, insulation and heat pumps for homes without mains gas heating and a combined annual household income of less than £31k (or households in receipt of means-tested benefits or living in a low-income area). The scheme is for owner-occupiers and private rented properties only. It is free for owner-occupiers and tenants, but landlords need to pay a contribution.
Connected For Warmth: free loft and cavity wall insulation for owner-occupier and private rented properties in council tax bands A-D and energy efficiency rating of EPC C-G. Landlords do not need to pay a contribution.
HUG 2 and Connected For Warmth are first-come-first-served and time limited, so please apply now to avoid disappointment!
You can find out more, make a referral or application on the Warm Homes Sheffield website or by calling 0800 107 8882 . Alternatively, please feel free to get in touch with the team directly by emailing housingenergyefficiencyteam@sheffield.gov.uk.

Special Coffee Morning Fundraiser to Support Cavendish Cancer Care
Mark your calendars for a special coffee morning on September 16, 2023, from 11 am to 1 pm at Gleadless Valley Methodist Church. This event is all about raising funds for Cavendish Cancer Care, a charity that provides essential support to families affected by cancer.
The motivation behind this special coffee morning comes from Barry Evans, who was diagnosed with stage 4 mantle cell lymphoma last November. While his blood cancer is treatable but not curable, Barry's family is determined to support others in their situation.
Barry's daughter, Ava Scott-Evans, has benefited from Cavendish Cancer Care's play therapy sessions to cope with her dad's diagnosis. These sessions are funded by the charity but face funding limitations.
A heartwarming addition to the event is Joshua Billiam-Stevens, a former Woodlands Primary School pupil, which Ava also attends. Joshua has been growing his hair for charity and plans to have it cut off during the coffee morning, with all proceeds going to Cavendish Cancer Care.
Gleadless Valley Methodist Church, known for its community support, is generously hosting the coffee morning and providing refreshments. They've even purchased Cavendish Cancer Care T-shirts to show their support.
Join us on September 16th to show your support and contribute to this important cause. Together, we can make a significant impact in the lives of families facing cancer, thanks to Cavendish Cancer Care's essential services.

Gleadless Valley's Community Gardens awarded coveted Green Flag Awards
In July, the Herdings Community and Heritage Centre and Gleadless Valley Methodist Church Community Gardens were winners of Green Flag Community Awards. The accreditation is the international quality mark for parks and green spaces.
Keep Britain Tidy's Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd MBE said: 'I would like to congratulate everyone involved. The Community Gardens are vital green spaces for the community, bringing people together and providing opportunities to lead healthy lifestyles. The volunteers do so much to ensure that they maintain the high standards of the Green Flag Award and everyone involved should feel extremely proud of their achievement.'
Kim Hinchliffe (Kim@heeleyfarm.org.uk) runs the volunteer gardening sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9am and noon at the Herdings Community and Heritage Centre Community Garden and on Fridays between 10 am and 1pm at the Gleadless Valley Methodist Church Community Garden.
Everyone is welcome to visit the gardens where you can relax and lend a hand with some watering, weeding and planting if you'd like - no previous gardening experience needed.
