Help to keep communities safe
This newsletter is to help keep you updated with the latest information about Covid-19 so you can share with your organisations and communities. Thank you for your support, we appreciate everything you're doing to help keep communities in Sheffield safe.
Vaccine update from the CCG
Over 260,000 people in Sheffield have had their first vaccination, including over 90% of over 50s, and around 70,000 people have received their second dose. This means around 10% of the population is fully protected. It’s important when you do get invited, that you act on it and get your second jab (remember, you may be contacted at short notice).
Invitations to people in their late 40s will begin this week, and more will follow as supplies allow. If you're invited, please do act on it as soon as possible so that you can join the millions of others who are helping to protect themselves and others, and continue our progress back towards normal life.
The AstraZeneca vaccine
The independent Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and World Health Organization have both said people should continue taking the AstraZeneca vaccine because its benefits in preventing Covid-19 infection far outweigh any risks.
Following the rare but serious blood clots in a small number of people who had the AstraZeneca vaccine, the JCVI is now recommending that healthy adults under 30 should have an alternative vaccine where possible.
The risk of a blood clot is extremely low - around four in one million. As a comparison, the risk of blood clots in women taking the contraceptive pill is much higher - around 5 per 10,000. It's important to point out that these can also occur naturally, and clotting problems are a common complication of COVID-19 infection.
Keep up to date with how the vaccine roll out is going in Sheffield from trusted sources.
