Junction 26 of the M5
Work starts next week on a £5.7 million Somerset Council Highways scheme to replace a deteriorating 51-year-old concrete road and motorway junction.
The refurbishment of Junction 26 of the M5 along with the A38 Chelston link road near Wellington, which were built in 1974, is entirely funded by Government grants.
All sliproads at Junction 26, the roundabout and the A38 link road from the motorway to the Chelston roundabout will be closed from Sunday night, 15 June, until late September to enable the works to happen safely.
Somerset Council’s major adult social care transformation programme has won a prestigious Local Government Chronicle (LGC) award for its transformation of their adult social care service.
In 2023, Somerset Council commissioned consultant, Newton, to help them transform their adult social care service, recognising that due to a variety of contributing factors, such as a rapidly aging population, the service was facing increasing demand, which was at the time projecting a £13 million overspend to their budget. This was alongside significant operational pressures on their workforce.

Today, Monday 9 June, Somerset Council will share a poem written and read by Somerset resident and previous unpaid carer, Alison Birket.
The poem, titled ‘Twenty-four hours in the life of a carer‘ vividly illustrates the emotional and physical challenges faced by unpaid carers, spoken by someone who has real experience.

Somerset Council’s West Somerset House in Williton will soon be home to the library, Williton Registration Office a Customer Access Point and Health Visitors following a recent refurbishment.
West Somerset House, which has been closed since December, will reopen with the new services on Wednesday 25 June.

Somerset Council is working with Wessex Water and Wales & West Utilities to co-ordinate 2 vital infrastructure schemes in Chard during 2025.
Wessex Water is investing more than £1.3 million to help alleviate sewer flooding in the town, while Wales & West Utilities is delivering a £415,000 upgrade to a gas main, switching from the current metal pipes to long-lasting plastic pipes, with the work being carried out between January and October 2025.

Somerset residents are being asked for their views on Somerset Council’s highways and transport services – from the condition of roads and footpaths to the quality of cycling facilities.
Their answers will be compared with the views of other members of the public across England and Scotland, thanks to the National Highways and Transport Public Satisfaction survey.
