The Met Office is warning of severe adverse weather in Somerset over the next 24 hours.
A Red warning for wind is in place from 3am to 11am on Saturday for north coastal regions of the county, with wind speeds up to 90mph possible. Red is the highest level of alert and means there is a possible danger to life.

Leaders from Somerset Council have met with the county’s 7 MPs and their representatives in Westminster to ensure Somerset’s voices are heard on the national stage.
Cllr Bill Revans invited Somerset MPs Adam Dance, Anna Sabine, Sir Ashley Fox, Gideon Amos, Rachel Gilmour, Sarah Dyke and Tessa Munt to the briefing and asked for their support ahead of next month’s local government finance settlement.
 Somerset households struggling to pay their bills and keep warm during the colder months could be eligible for help with everyday essentials, such as food, water and energy costs.
Somerset Council’s ‘Help Through Winter’ campaign is supporting charities and local organisations, such as the Somerset Community Foundation, to assist vulnerable residents with their outgoings and needs during the colder months.

Somerset Council’s Severe Weather Emergency Provision is once again active in Somerset.
During this period of severe weather, the Council is seeking to provide emergency accommodation for rough sleepers to prevent harm or death due to the severe weather.
The SWEP response is used by many local authorities when there is a forecast of 0°C degrees or below. Severe weather also includes heat waves, high winds and flooding.

December is here, and everyone is eagerly anticipating Christmas, especially in Wells, where the beloved festive market returns for one big day on Saturday, 14 December 2024, from 9am to 3pm.
It will not be long until over 100 stalls fill the medieval Market Place and Bishop’s Palace Green in this famous city, offering an array of unique and handmade goods, and festive food and drink.

Somerset Council is asking members of the public to have their say on proposed changes to admission arrangements for Somerset schools for the academic year 2026 to 2027. The Consultation runs from today, 2 December 2024, to 20 January 2025.
Admission arrangements can include catchment areas, the number of school places available and how they are allocated according to the school’s over-subscription criteria.

Somerset Council is encouraging shoppers to think outside the box this Christmas and put a dent in the county’s annual cardboard mountain. Recycling stats in Somerset show a rise in cardboard collected at the kerbside every January.
As our habits for shopping online continue, the amount of cardboard in our recycling continues to rise too.

A new cycling and walking route complete with eco-friendly lighting and forming part of an ever-growing network has been opened in Bridgwater.
Children from Northgate Primary School were on hand to celebrate the completion of the new route, a shared use cycle route from Linham road to the docks, extending the cycle network and linking with the Council’s previously delivered route over Saltlands bridge and along the eastern side of the river to Express Park.
