Somerset parents and carers of children due to start school or move on to their next school in September 2025 are being urged to apply for their place online and on time.

Parents and carers of children due to transfer to Secondary or Upper School can apply for places for their children from now until 31 October 2024.

Watchet Marina new leaseholder welcomed

Somerset Council has welcomed proposed improvements to Watchet Marina under the new leaseholders Western Marinas Limited. Western Marinas Ltd has taken on the assets that were previously under the management of The Marine & Property Group Ltd. Its plans include the return of fuel sales and a full electrical refit as well as dredging at Watchet Marina.

Watch out for unpaid parking text scams

Somerset Council is warning that fraudulent text messages about unpaid parking fines have been sent to Somerset residents. The council are reminding the public that the council does not text residents with parking fines (PCN). If you receive one of these texts, it is not from Somerset Council and may be a scam.

Council carrying out essential repairs on key Hinkley transport artery

Somerset Council’s Highways Team is resurfacing sections of one of the key roads into Hinkley Point C next week. The phased work will take place on the C182 between the entrance to the plant and the Cannington Roundabout. The Council’s specialist resurfacing contractor Heidelberg Materials is starting work on Monday 23 September and the scheme is expected to complete on Tuesday 26 October.

Essential drainage works underway next week in Winsham

Somerset Council’s Highways Team is doing some essential drainage works on Church Street in Winsham. The scheme, which will reduce the potential for road flooding and hazardous surface water ahead of the winter, is located between Court Street and Back Street. Work will take place between Monday 23 September and Monday 21 October with a 24-hour closure in place due to open excavations.

Blood pressure campaign takes off at Leonardo

More than 90 staff at Leonardo in Yeovil, the Home of British Helicopters, know their numbers after taking part in the blood pressure awareness campaign on 17 September 2024. ‘Take the Pressure Off’, a joint initiative between Public Health at Somerset Council and NHS Somerset aims to raise awareness about high blood pressure and encourage early detection through free blood pressure checks within communities across Somerset.

South West Trading Standards is warning consumers to be wary of cold callers pressuring them to pay to have spray foam insulation removed – insulation that in many cases was only installed in the last couple of years.

The warning follows a recent increase in the number of complaints about the way these products and services are sold.
