We've moved to the next stage on the limited update of the Mendip Local Plan Part II (Sites and Policies) document. Following a Judicial Review decision, we consulted on housing sites to provide an extra 505 homes by 2029. Revisions are not being made to the policies of the existing adopted Mendip Local Plans.
We're inviting representations on a submission Plan until 12 August 2024.
The publication stage of a local plan allows for individuals and organisations to respond to the final version of proposals before submission to the Secretary of State.
The Plan identifies 9 sites, some of which have now been granted planning consent (marked *). These are:
- FR10: Land at North Parade Car Park, Frome
- GL6: Land off Common Moor Drove, Glastonbury*
- GL7: Land at Norbin’s Road, Glastonbury
- ST5: Land to rear of Crispin Centre, Street
- ST6: Land at Brooks Farm, Street
- WL6 Wells Police Station*
- MN1: Land at White Post, Midsomer Norton/Westfield*
- MN4: Land at Beauchamps Drive, Midsomer Norton, Westfield*
- CL2: Land at Anchor Road, Coleford*
The plan and supporting documents can be accessed via our Mendip Adopted Local Plans webpage. Inspection copies of documents are available at our Shape Mendip offices in Shepton Mallet. Documents can also be viewed online from our other Customer Access Points – see the consultation notice for further details.
Details of online briefing sessions during the publication period will be posted via the Mendip Adopted Local Plans webpage linked above.
Making responses
You should make a response at this stage if you wish changes or objections to be considered at examination. Responses will also help shape the matters and issues to be addressed and should focus on the soundness of the Plan and/or legal compliance. Please read our guidance notes on making representations.

Alternatively, you can email responses to planningpolicyeast@somerset.gov.uk, or post them to:
Planning Policy Council Offices Cannards Grave Road Shepton Mallet BA4 5BT

The Plan will be submitted by the end of September 2024 and public hearings are likely to take place early next year.

Information on what a Neighbourhood Development Plan entails, is available via our Neighbourhood Planning webpage. All Neighbourhood Plans, whether adopted or in production, have been combined into one webpage to make them easier to find.

Taking place alongside the General Election on 4 July was the long-awaited Referendum for the Puriton Neighbourhood Plan. With a recorded turnout of 59.2%, over 80% of residents voted decisively to approve the plan.
The formal making of the plan will be considered by the Planning and Transport Policy Sub-Committee next month, before becoming part of the statutory development plan alongside for example, the adopted Local Plan for the area.
There is an increased focus on the Puriton area which also hosts the Gravity Enterprise Zone and whilst the Neighbourhood Plan doesn’t cover the site directly, it will help to guide any future developments in the area and protect important local green spaces in and around the village itself.
