Nearly half the content of the average Somerset bin could have been recycled, Somerset Council can reveal.
The 48% figure found this year is an impressive 11% decrease on 2018 – the last time the ‘composition analysis’ was carried out in the county. But there is still much more to do, especially when it comes to food waste.

Alongside National Parenting Week, a retired foster carer is sharing the importance of Parent & Child Carers in Somerset, a role which provides care and support for not only a young child, but their parents also.
National Parenting Week takes place from 16 to 20 October and highlights the significant influence a child’s upbringing has across every aspect of their life – from personality and development to their lifelong social and emotional welfare.
Conflict is a normal part of all relationships, but that conflict can become unhealthy when tensions rise and it feels like there is an imbalance of power between those who are arguing. Research shows that 13% of children in Somerset are likely to live in families where parents struggle with ‘unhealthy conflict’.
Unhealthy conflict can occur when parents live together or apart, and can have a negative impact on the mental and physical health of both children and their parents.

The Government has made an extra £842 million available to help the most vulnerable across England.
The Household Support Fund is there to help low-income households, including families, pensioners, unpaid carers, care leavers and disabled people. It provides immediate help for those who are struggling. This could include help with your energy, water, broadband and phone bills, as well as other essentials such as food, clothing and hygiene products. The fund can also assist with transport-related costs such as car repairs, buying a bicycle or paying for fuel.

Somerset residents are being reminded to check their electoral registration details or risk losing their chance to vote on decisions that affect them.
The annual canvass allows Somerset Council to keep the electoral register up to date, to identify who risks losing their voice at elections, and to encourage them to register before it is too late. Anyone not on the register cannot vote.
