Unsung community heroes from across Somerset have been recognised at Somerset Council’s Chair’s Awards for their unstinting service to their communities.
The awards ceremony had been an annual event for many years for Somerset County Council. This latest event was a first for Somerset Council since it came into being on 1 April this year.
A developer failed to properly put back a cycle way and footpath it had dug up in Norton Fitzwarren despite repeated requests by Somerset Council over two years.
St Modwen Homes Limited had been authorised to carry out work in the area in 2021 by the Council which involved digging 20m down and connecting a manhole to the storm drain.

A Taunton shopkeeper has pleaded guilty to selling counterfeit tobacco and has been ordered to carry out 100 hours of community work.
Allen Ahmadi, the proprietor of Wawel Polish shop, admitted selling counterfeit tobacco without the legal health warnings at Taunton Magistrates Court.

It’s probably nothing serious, but finding cancer early makes it more treatable and can save lives.

Somerset Council’s recycling sites in Wellington and Bridgwater will remain open seven days a week until Taunton Recycling Site can safely re-open.
Wellington is usually closed on Mondays and Tuesdays but will open Monday to Sunday. Bridgwater usually closes on Wednesdays but is also open seven days next week.
Visitors are warned that Wellington is experiencing an influx of visitors on Wednesdays, the site’s previous first opening day of the week. If possible, Taunton visitors are asked to avoid this site and use Bridgwater Recycling Site instead, which is seeing less visitors on a Wednesday.

Somerset Council is asking everyone to reduce waste this Halloween and stay-single use free during fright-night.
The beginning of October saw a ban on the sale of many single-use plastic items come into force, including plastic cups, plates and other items associated with parties like balloon sticks.

Ten start-up businesses have been given a helping hand from Somerset Council’s innovative Launch Pad programme.
The businesses have all received a wide range of fully funded help to get them ready to move to the next level. Somerset Council’s Highways team urgently needs to remove a tree which is causing subsidence to the foundations of a private home.
The homeowner in Beechwood Avenue discovered the problem caused by the beech tree’s roots and reported it to the Council.
Somerset Council’s highways team is carrying out important vegetation clearance on the B3224 at Roundwaters near Exford next week.
This will need a road closure and the Council has agreed with Openreach to take advantage of an arranged closure which has been scheduled from 16 October.
