In the lead up to Taunton Pride this weekend, a same sex couple from Somerset are sharing how fostering teenagers has a positive impact on the lives of vulnerable young people, as well as their own. Somerset Council foster carers, Caroline and Liz, have fostered with the Local Authority for seven years, providing care for more than 20 children and young people during that time.
Somerset Council and its collections contractor SUEZ Recycling and Recovery are proud to be supporting this weekend’s Taunton Pride event. Between them they will be helping to keep the event site clean and tidy by providing a recycling and rubbish service during Saturday’s extravaganza in Vivary Park.

Set up by Somerset Council and Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership (HotSW) Invest Somerset aims to increase economic growth in the county. It offers a one-stop shop approach to facilitate more jobs and investment and works closely with people at key organisations who can support relocation and expansion projects
There’s more to an election than dropping a ballot paper in a box and now Somerset Council is offering interested people the chance to get involved in behind-the-scenes roles – and be paid. The rates of pay for election staff varies depending on the job role and the type of election. The amounts will be confirmed before an election.

The medieval village of Dunster has become the latest location to benefit from the Council’s rollout of electric vehicle charging points. The 22kW fast charge point is located in Dunster Steep car park (somerset.gov.uk). It has become one of 305 publicly accessible charge points in Somerset, a figure that has increased 40.5% from 217 in June 2022.

Breastfeeding is great for both mother and baby, helping to build a strong bond and giving babies the best start in life. With National Breastfeeding Week about to start (18-25 September) with the theme “Everyone has a part to play in helping mums to breastfeed”, Somerset Council is encouraging more organisations, venues and businesses in the county to sign up to Positive About Breastfeeding.

South Somerset Heritage Collection (SSHC) is organising a Heritage Open Day on Saturday 16th September at Yeovil Library to celebrate the town’s industrial heritage. The free to attend pop-up museum will reflect some of Yeovil’s well-known industries such as aircraft and helicopter manufacture, glove production, creameries and cheese production as well as railways, and will contain objects and photographs from the SSHC.

A new cycling route along Yeovil’s Lyde Road is being delivered by Somerset Council. The first stage in creating a dedicated cycling route along the road as part of a growing cycling network in the town commenced this week and will take about five weeks to complete. This initial section is from Camborne Street to Sandringham Road and will be done under traffic lights.

Somerset Council’s ‘Walk for a Life’ event, aimed at raising awareness of suicide prevention, returned on Saturday 9 September. Starting at the Castle House at the Museum of Somerset at 10:30am, crowds gathered to take the mile long walk through Taunton’s Town Centre, passing through meaningful locations to commemorate those impacted by suicide within the County.
