Somerset Council is hoping to secure Government funding to deliver phosphate mitigation measures which will unlock the delivery of 18,000 new homes across the area and provide for longer term nature recovery.

The deadline to apply for FREE Voter photo ID is fast approaching for people planning to vote in person at a polling station to elect a new Somerset Councillor to represent Castle Cary.
One of the two Somerset Council seats is currently vacant, and electors will be going to the polls on 10 August.
Voters must show photo ID to receive their ballot paper in polling stations. Those without an accepted type of ID can apply online for a free Voter Authority Certificate by 2 August at www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate
A by election is due to be held in Castle Cary for a vacancy on Somerset Council. The Notice of Election has been published. Local voters will be going to the polls on 10 August

From supporting people looking for work, or a step up the career ladder, to making a real difference to young people, there’s a Somerset Council volunteer role just waiting to be filled.
Two openings are available with the Youth Justice Team:
- Family Group Conference Volunteers: A family group conference is led by family members to plan and make decisions for a child who is at risk. Volunteers in this role support parents who may struggle to express their views. The role of the advocate for any vulnerable adult at the Family Group Conference (FGC) can be essential to its success.
- Reparation Mentors: Volunteers in this role support young people to fully participate in reparation work as part of a Court Order. This is a really rewarding role where you are actively supporting the young person to develop life skills whilst supporting their local community. The Youth Justice Team looking for volunteers who would be prepared to support young people to experience environment and wildlife.

The outstanding achievements of Somerset’s children and young people were celebrated at an awards ceremony at Taunton Rugby Club on Tuesday 25th July.
The event, which was attended by celebrated author, poet and care leaver Lemn Sissay OBE, was organised by care experienced young people from the Somerset In Care and Leaving Care Council (SiCC & SLCC), with support from the Council’s Engagement and Participation team.

More than 2,000 affordable homes have been delivered across Somerset over the past three years, thanks to Somerset Council.
The Housing Enabling team have been working closely with a range of affordable housing delivery partners to provide new, high quality, energy efficient homes that locals can afford.
The Council understands that affordable housing must meet a range of needs and work is taking place to increase the provision for larger homes, fully adapted wheelchair accessible homes and is working in partnership within parishes to satisfy identified housing need.

Two innovative Somerset Council initiatives boosting public transport and active travel are in the running for prestigious awards.
The Bridgwater Way provides information, advice and tools to help people switch to bike or foot, and provides information on the best times to travel and routes to use. It has delivered key active travel projects in partnership with transport planning specialists Steer involving a programme of activities for schools across the town to promote and support active travel to school and reduce the number of cars at the school gate.
Somerset Council’s Bus It campaign, has helped to boost bus use across the County. Both have been shortlisted in this year’s National Transport Awards.

A rare opportunity to take a step back in time and see industrial history at first hand is being offered by Somerset Council.
Special, limited-numbers tours of the nationally important Toneworks in Wellington, are being offered for the first time to give ticketholders the chance to see the extraordinary interior of the more than 200-year-old Grade II* listed premises.

Trading Standards and police have closed a second store in Taunton which was selling vapes and drug paraphernalia to children, as well as counterfeit and illegal tobacco.
Heart of the South West Trading Standards Service (HoTSW TS) worked with Avon and Somerset Police to apply for a closure against the European Shop in North Street, which was granted at Taunton Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (18 July).

A designated “High Street Heritage Action Zone” (HSHAZ), Chard’s historic centre is experiencing a host of architectural and aesthetic improvements, as public spaces and shop front enhancements revitalise the popular Somerset town – and there is more to come.
The HSHAZ project aims to make Chard’s main shopping area a more attractive, engaging and vibrant place for people to work, live and visit, with phase one of works to the public realm in Fore Street and Holyrood Street completing in February this year.

Ham Hill Country Park is excited to be hosting its ever-popular dog show on Sunday 13 August 2023.
Set amidst the stunning backdrop of Ham Hill Country Park, popular with dog walkers from all over the local area and often much further afield, this event will be a celebration of the wonderful bond between a dog and its family.
Dogs from around Somerset and beyond are invited to put their best paw forward. Whether your dog is full of wagginess, cuteness, energy, or even sometimes a little grumpiness, there will be something for them and you to enjoy.
