Strike action by Somerset waste collection crews has been suspended for two weeks pending a union ballot.
Talks between the Unite union and Suez UK – the Council’s collections contractor – made progress and the union has agreed to ballot its membership on an improved pay offer.
The strike action that was planned to start on Wednesday (12 July) has been suspended pending the outcome of the ballot and all collections services should be running as normal this week.

To see if your child is up to date with their MMR vaccines, check your child’s personal child health record (PCHR), known as the 'red book', or contact your GP practice.
If anyone has missed one or both doses of the MMR vaccine, contact your GP practice to book an appointment. It is never too late to catch up.

Somerset Council will undertake resurfacing works Preston Road in Yeovil next week.
The resurfacing works will take place from Monday 17 July to Friday 21 July. These works will be undertaken during an evening road closure from 6.30pm to 11.30pm. The works will be closed during these hours and a diversion route will be signed.

Somerset Council’s highways team is carrying out a raft of improvements to roads in and around Bruton this summer, representing a significant investment in the network.
The aim is to minimise the length of disruption for residents, businesses and road users by scheduling the works in one continuous series. Work will be carried out on the schemes between 17 July and 27 August.

Work to renew traffic lights and crossings in the centre of Bridgwater as part of a multi-million Somerset-wide package has been completed on time and on budget.
The Somerset Council scheme, which is a key component in the town’s Celebration Mile project, has seen upgrades to traffic signals at the Broadway/St John’s Street junction as well as the zebra crossings on Broadway near Blake Place being replaced with new puffin crossings.

Somerset Council has successfully prosecuted a Taunton landlord for breaching Housing laws.
Under the Housing Act 2004, landlords who rent out a property which houses five or more occupants, who share facilities, must apply to their local authority for a license.
A landlord routinely failed to licence eight properties in the Taunton area and has been prosecuted by the local authority. They pleaded guilty and will face a fine of £34,640.

There’s less than a week until eligible voters in the Somerton and Frome constituency head to polling stations to cast their ballot in the Parliamentary by election.
Poll cards have been issued and make it clear that voters must provide photographic ID to vote in person at a polling station. Please remember to bring ID if you are voting in person. Those without acceptable photo ID will be turned away – they can return if they can provide appropriate ID.

A bursary fund which helps disadvantaged young people in Somerset take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) scheme has received a welcome boost from a fundraising bike ride.
DofE participants from Frome Community College joined cyclists from Somerset Council’s DofE team and Somerset Freemasons along the Collier’s Way ride between Frome and Midsomer Norton.

Businesses and organisations in Somerset are being encouraged to find out if they are eligible for capital funding grants aimed at supporting businesses and community infrastructure in rural areas.
The funding is available following Somerset Council’s successful £3.4 million submission into the Government’s Rural England Prosperity Fund (REPF).
