School reports on pupil performance: guide for headteachers

Government guidance in relation to writing statutory end of year reports for parents has been updated. The update confirms that regulations have been laid to remove the requirement to report on national curriculum assessments and attendance. It also explains the different requirements of annual and school leaver reports.

NQT induction during COVID-19: final assessments

A reminder that the deadline for NQT assessments due this term is Friday 10 July. Further information on final assessments can be found here.

This deadline is to facilitate the work of the scrutiny panel which meets before the end of term to ratify judgements made on the forms.

RNLI water safety from home resources

The RNLI have produced free teaching resources to educate children on water safety, focusing on keeping safe this summer.

The materials have been designed to be fun and engaging, combining videos, problem-solving activities and guided discussions. Not only will they get children's brains working, the activities also pass on invaluable water safety advice.

The activities have been carefully put together by the RNLI's water safety team and have been specifically tailored for primary and secondary school aged children.

Pompey's Military Kids: summer PE challenge for service children and young people

£100 prize for 'best' school!

Do you look forward to taking part in Pompey's Military Kids' annual sports event? If you do, you will be pleased to hear that this year, instead of our usual event, we are running an exciting fitness challenge for all children and young people from a service family.

If your school receives service pupil premium (SPP) for any of your pupils you are invited to join in the Pompey's Military Kids network. We meet regularly to explore the challenges service children face and how to make best use of your SPP.

Free online CPD: Understanding and supporting children and young people who have experienced trauma

A free online staff CPD course about understanding and supporting children and young people who have experienced trauma is being provided by Ian Hunkin of the Delta Education Trust. Nine sessions are already available online.

Re-imagining the purpose of education and planning a recovery curriculum

The Portsmouth Teaching School Alliance are offering a bespoke session with Rob Carpenter on re-imagining the purpose of education and planning a recovery curriculum.

The session will cover a variety of themes designed to support school leaders in planning curriculum priorities as you turn attention to being able to open schools more widely from September.

The digital session will take place on Friday 3 July 2020, 9.30 a.m. - 11.00 a.m.

Oak National Academy: creation of 10,000 lessons for next year

The Oak National Academy will create around 10,000 lessons – including a version of the entire national curriculum – after being awarded £4.34 million by the government to continue next year.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) Day 2020

RSE Day is on 25 June 2020. It is an annual celebration of excellent relationships and sex education that educates children and young people about healthy relationships and positive sexual health.

RSE Day encourages schools and the wider community to get involved. To get started, download the '20 ideas for RSE Day 2020' packs for primary and secondary settings available free via the RSE Day webpage.

Global Learning Week, 22-26 June 2020

Microsoft is hosting Global Learning Week, a free event on Facebook, from 22-26 June 2020. It will be available both as live sessions each day as well as through on-demand segments available to educators to watch as they’re able.

Each episode will be full of educator and student success stories, helpful tips, and ideas for engaging lessons that can be delivered in the classroom or virtually.

Emotional health and wellbeing

Information sheet on the use of nitrogen oxide (NOS)

Following the increase of young people engaging in the use of the psychoactive substance nitrogen oxide (NOS), the Portsmouth DASS (Drug and Alcohol Support Service) has provided an information leaflet for secondary schools. This is to be cascaded to a wider audience of parents and young people by school social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and other media outlets.

The Portsmouth DASS team operate a confidential self-referral process for young people aged 0-19 for any aspects of support around drug and/or alcohol use. A young person can contact DASS directly if they want support. An adult, such as a teacher or youth worker, can contact the service on behalf of the young person if they have their permission.

Guidance for schools: post Reading terrorist attack, Saturday 20 June 2020

Following the terror attack that took place on Saturday 20 June in Reading, the DfE have produced guidance and advice that may be of assistance to schools seeking support in the aftermath of the incident.
