Emotional health and wellbeing

Inspectors praise support for children in Portsmouth who need mental health support

Following the Joint Targeted Area Inspection (JTAI) in December 2019, organisations across Portsmouth have been praised for their support for children who need mental health support as well as those suffering from abuse, neglect and exploitation.

Schools, the NHS, the police, the council and voluntary organisations are particularly commended for working closely together in a strong partnership, for their learning culture and for their innovation and creativity, helping to ensure that children in Portsmouth are receiving the emotional well-being and mental health services they need.

The report notes "Schools are fully engaged in supporting children’s emotional well-being and mental health. Attending school is seen as integral to supporting children’s emotional well-being and safeguarding them. The new Portsmouth inclusive education quality mark for schools supports this approach."

Tier 2 co-ordinators

Tier 2 co-ordinators work in the Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) Early Help Team to help when cases are assessed as meeting a Tier 2 threshold. The co-ordinators will assist in identifying support needs with the family and act as a critical friend to guide the professional network in undertaking a plan of support including Early Help Assessments (EHA), meetings and effective family plans. Tier 2 co-ordinators support Portsmouth Safeguarding Children Board training in Early Help procedures and advise professionals in the city about procedures, local support services and facilities that may be available for a family.
