Council Chamber, Plymouth Civic Centre
Wednesday 17 February 2016, 6pm

Conceived as the centrepiece of Abercrombie’s post-war plan, and originally celebrated as a signature building of Plymouth, the Civic Centre has recently attracted more negative perceptions. Its listing in 2007 was the subject of much controversy.

For over fifty years the building has remained relatively unchanged whilst Plymouth has moved on around it. The reinforced concrete structure has deteriorated, resulting in headline grabbing structural failures and protective scaffolding.

Having served as Plymouth City Council’s headquarters for over half a century, this listed landmark building is about to embark on a new lease of life with its new owner, Urban Splash.
This talk will cover some of the most interesting aspects of the building’s past, present and future and will be of general interest to people from all areas of the local construction industry.

Speakers

  • Chris Robinson. Plymouth historian, artist and broadcaster.
  • Jonathan Derwent. Structural engineer at Hydrock.
  • Nathan Cornish. Director at Urban Splash.
