Welcome to Tuesday's coronavirus (COVID-19) latest insights, a roundup of our analysis related to the pandemic.

 

UK deaths from coronavirus (COVID-19) continued to fall in the week ending 11 March 2022. Deaths involving COVID-19 accounted for around 1 in every 15 deaths (6.4%).

Between March 2020 and December 2021, there was 133,623 excess deaths (above the five-year average) registered in England and Wales. The highest numbers of excess deaths were recorded in April 2020 and January 2021. 

Provisional data for 2021 shows the fertility rate in England and Wales increased year-on-year for the first time since 2012. There were 625,008 live births, an increase of 1.5% from 2020. This remains well below the 2019 number and continues a long-term trend of falling numbers of live births.
