NRW officers have met with the Directors of Withyhedge Landfill site operators RML this week to discuss the findings of the recent audit of the gas management system. The audit has identified several areas of concern. We intend to provide more information about the gas management system and the actions being taken by NRW next week.
In recent weeks NRW have been taking 30-minute samples of ambient hydrogen sulphide levels in areas where landfill gas has been detected as part of our odour assessments. We have shared this data with Public Health Wales (PHW) this week to inform further health risk assessments.

Public Health Wales this week published its health risk assessment of air quality data, and is reiterating its advice to residents in the area around the Withyhedge landfill site.
The data suggests that, at times during March and April 2024, levels of hydrogen sulphide in the air around the site have been above the World Health Organization (WHO) odour annoyance guideline.
Public Health Wales advice therefore remains that residents should keep doors and windows closed when the smells are present, and to seek medical advice if they feel unwell. Pembrokeshire County Council is continuing to work in collaboration with the Air Quality Group to ensure that robust data is collated to inform future Public Health Wales assessments.
Work includes refining and developing the air quality monitoring programme in the vicinity of the landfill site, and suitable static monitoring locations are being identified for the siting of equipment.
A copy of the third Geotechnology report on community air quality monitoring has been received and the Air Quality Group is considering its content.

If you smell a strong odour you believe to be coming from Withyhedge Landfill, please report it to us at the time you experience it.
Odour reports continue to help us build a picture of when and where any odours are prevalent in the community. They also help us assess the impacts of the remedial action taken by the operator, and inform our response.
