Booster vaccine

Over a million people in the UK are invited for a booster jab this week

The NHS Covid-19 vaccination programme has already prevented 24 million cases and saved more than 112,000 lives.

The booster vaccine dose helps improve the protection you have from your first two doses of the vaccine and helps give you longer-term protection against getting seriously ill from Covid-19.

Those eligible for a booster jab include people aged 50 and over, front line health and social care workers, adult carers, and those aged 16 – 49 years with underlying health conditions. There must be a six-month gap between the second jab and the booster.

As the booster programme begins, it's really important to wait for the NHS to contact you first. Then, when you're invited, please take up the offer.

In addition to the Covid-19 vaccine, it is more important than ever to get vaccinated against the flu this Autumn if you're eligible. Find out more on the NHS website.

Scams to watch out for

Travelling abroad scams

If you’re heading back from overseas, make sure you don’t fall victim to a scam when booking your Covid-19 tests. You can compare and choose a test provider based on cost and availability in your area by visiting gov.uk.

Regular Covid-19 testing at work helps protect your workforce and customers but make sure you protect your business too. Don’t fall foul of fake private sector testing services and test kit providers. Remember:

  • Research any test provider you are considering and the products or services they supply
  • Check they are listed on the Department for Health and Social Care website
  • Be wary of contact from businesses offering private sector testing out of the blue - report any suspicious activity and/or problem private testing providers to Trading Standards through the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133.

Staying safe is a breeze

Meeting up outside to keep safe

The announcement of the Autumn and Winter Plan last week came with a reminder to continue with the measures to keep each other safe and stop the spread of Covid-19.

Did you know ventilation is one of those important measures?

When a person infected with Covid-19 coughs, talks or breathes, they release droplets and aerosols that another person can breathe in.

Meeting others outdoors is the safest option, but if you’re indoors, you should let fresh air in to improve ventilation reduce the risk of catching or spreading Covid-19.

Rules for international travel to England will change on 4 October 2021

Airplane

The Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, has announced a simplified system for international travel in light of the success of the UK’s domestic vaccine rollout, providing greater stability for industry and passengers.

From Monday 4 October at 4am a new clearer travel system will be introduced. There will be one red list of countries that the Government will not recommend for travel. Anywhere not on the red list is clear for travel and there will be simplified travel measures for arrivals from the rest of the world.

12-15-year-olds can now receive the Covid-19 vaccine

Young people at school

Parents and guardians will get a letter with information about when the vaccine will be offered. Vaccinating your 12-15s will help keep their lives moving, supporting their mental health and wellbeing.

Some children are being offered two doses of the vaccine if either:

  • they live with someone who is more likely to get infections (such as someone who has HIV, has had a transplant or is having certain treatments for cancer, lupus or rheumatoid arthritis)
  • they have a condition that means they're at high risk from Covid-19

The Government has published a Covid-19 vaccination guide to help explain the vaccination programme for eligible children and young people aged 12 to 17. The guide covers information about coronavirus, risk of infection, protection from the vaccine, consent, side effects and more.

The difference between PCR and rapid lateral flow tests

Coronavirus: how to stay safe and help prevent the spread

Which Covid-19 test you should get and when?

Rapid lateral flow tests are for when you don’t have symptoms and should be taken as part of the routine twice weekly testing.

PCR tests are for when you have symptoms or if you have been double jabbed but in contact with someone who has tested positive.

Financial support for isolating

If you have tested positive for Covid-19 and are self-isolating, you may be eligible for a Test and Trace Support Payment.

You might be able to get £500 financial support if you are on a low income and meet the following conditions:

  • you have tested positive for coronavirus, or have been told are a close contact by NHS Test and Trace
  • if your child (if you’re the parent or guardian) has tested positive or been informed that they are a close contact by NHS Test and Trace
  • you cannot work from home and will lose income by self-isolating or staying at home to care for the child
  • you’re not exempt from self-isolating

If you think you meet the criteria you need to claim within 42 days of you or the child’s first day of self-isolation.
