Crafty Christmas

Christmas shopping this year may be more difficult than normal so why not get crafty & make your own gifts or decorations. Every day lots of unwanted fabric is thrown away, it could be those old curtains or maybe a dress or shirt you no longer wear. Why not give it a makeover and turn it into something new?

Festive food waste reduction

Over a third of us reckon that we throw away more food at Christmas than any other time of the year...

...So let’s all get creative with those leftovers and make some delicious meals to see us through the festive period. Those unwanted brussel sprouts could be a tasty gratin or what about a turkey and mango curry to warm you up after being out in the cold.

Get Christmas all wrapped up

Image of wrapping paper with bow

An estimated 108 million rolls of wrapping are used each year, often not being recycled and placed in the general waste bin.

Did you know that wrapping paper that has glitter on it or is made of foil cannot be recycled?

To help you find out if wrapping can be recycled try the ‘scrunch test’. If you scrunch the paper and it stays scrunched it means it can be recycled, if it bounces back it’s not recyclable and needs to go in your general waste bin. Remember to also remove any ribbons, bows or tape before you put paper in your recycling bin.

Top Christmas recycling tips

● Flatten your cardboard boxes before you put them in your recycling bin, that way you will have more room to recycle more!

● Any item with a plug or that uses batteries is classed as WEEE - Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment. Take these items to your local household waste recycling centre – you should never put them kerbside bins at home as they contaminate the other waste or recycling.

● Natural decorations like holly and ivy can be recycled with your garden waste just remember to remove any bows or ribbons first.

● Don’t forget your squirty cream and other aerosol cans are recyclable so when they're empty pop them in your recycling bin – just remember to remove the lid and place that in your general waste.

Santa's naughty list

Santa's naughty list for recycling items

Make sure you avoid being on the naughty list this year by only recycling clean paper, cardboard, cans, tins, aerosols and plastic bottles, margarine tubs and yoghurt pots in your recycling bin at home.

If in doubt - leave it out!

Putting the wrong items in your kerbside recycling bin means the bin may be refused collection and we don't want that.
