Our March Review

We’ve had a really lovely March, with visitor numbers on the rise and the garden bursting with spring flowers.

Birds are starting to nest in the surrounding trees and hedges, though our resident pigeon family are leaving more twigs on our path than in the apple tree!

All our windowsills (alas not in the cottage itself) are covered with seed trays where flowers and vegetables are starting to grow for us to plant out in the coming months or to put up for sale on our plant stand.

We’ve been experimenting with new options for peat-free sustainable compost like that made with coconut coir or compressed compost discs which are more environmentally friendly to deliver.

We hope the dry weather holds and we can all get out into the garden and enjoy what nature has to offer, just like Mrs Smith.

Local Honey

We’re also excited to announce we’re now stocking local honey from The Artisan Honey Company, based at Caythorpe.

Honey at Mrs Smith's Cottage

Honey was always a favourite of Mrs Smith’s, and she was known to attribute her good health to a spoonful of the stuff every night before bed. Jars cost £3.50 for 4oz, £5 for 8oz, and come labelled with the Mrs Smith’s Cottage logo to make a lovely gift or souvenir.

Another find from the garden

horseshoe

Our volunteer Hazel discovered this piece of horseshoe while working on the flowerbed down our staff parking space on East Road. Situated right next to the building that once housed the Blacksmiths, it’s easy to guess where this treasure came from.

Mrs Smith fondly recalled the sound of the busy blacksmith’s shop and seeing all the farm workers come to have the scythes sharpened at harvest time, when she was interviewed for her hundredth birthday.
