Early Years Update

Early Years Update header

July 2024

As we reach the end of another academic year I would like to take the opportunity on behalf of the team to thank you all for your contribution to the early learning and care of our youngest children and I hope you all find some time over the summer to have a break. As a sector you have worked tirelessly to support our children and families over the year ensuring the best start possible for them on their education journey. You have allocated places to almost 1,000 two-year olds this term supporting those families with the cost of childcare, supporting our sufficiency duties, even with the ongoing recruitment and retention concerns for the sector. I would also like to thank the childminders that are so proactive in running the weekly Childminder Stay and Play sessions at Ashby Family Hub.

We would like to celebrate a small number of your achievements this year, by congratulating those of you who have had a successful Ofsted outcome this academic year. Most notably Vicky Lee, Apple Tree Day Nursery, The Ark Day Nursery and Daisy Chains Nursery who all achieved an outstanding judgement. Well done to your teams. We are keen to ensure the early years sector is represented at conferences and events and we would like to recognise the contribution of Becky Hutchinson from I Learn in Brigg who was outstanding in representing the sector at the recent SEND Conference for Professionals. Well done to those of you who have completed and are part way through early years qualifications, including the Early Years Professional Development Programme, particularly Little Frogs where the whole staff team have completed the programme. Finally we would like to pass on our congratulations to Ryan Hughes at Haxey Pre-school who was recently awarded Education Apprentice of the Year at the Greater Lincolnshire Apprentice of the Year Awards.

As we start to plan our training, networks and events for next academic year please let us know if there is anything you would like to see offered. We are currently considering what training we can offer for practitioners in baby rooms and for play workers offering primarily before and after school care. With the expansion of childcare continuing at pace over the coming year we are sure there will continue to be challenges for us all but please do access the support, advice and training that we offer as a team to support and assist you.

Educational Research Projects Survey

The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) - a national educational charity - would like your support in completing their short survey which is designed to help them better understand how they can work together to encourage more early years settings in your network (and across England) to take part in educational research projects.

Being able to generate high-quality research evidence is crucial to help inform early years educators' practice. Without having enough early years settings taking part in educational research project, such research evidence won't be possible. The survey that they are asking you to complete will help develop insights into what kinds of research incentives early years educators value most, for example.

As a small token of appreciation for your time completing the survey (approx. 15 minutes), you can choose to enter into a prize draw for a chance to win a £30 Amazon e-voucher.

If you are an owner or a director of a nursery group: please help us complete this survey: https://shorturl.at/Fe31Y

If you are an early years setting manager or educator, please help us complete this survey: https://shorturl.at/6oREp
