16 December 2022
As we approach the end of the year, we wanted to say a big thank you for your continued support and commitment to the children and families of North Lincolnshire. We feel privileged to support you and your families throughout the year with our visits, training and funding.
We are looking forward to a new year and our new training programme will be with you as you return in January.
Sending you best wishes for the end to the term and a well-deserved break over the festive period.
The information, below, on how to manage scarlet fever in your setting was circulated via email, last week.
WHEN SETTINGS SHOULD CALL THE HEALTH PROTECTION TEAM:
There are lots of viruses that cause sore throats, colds and coughs circulating at the moment. All of the infection control and prevention processes that you already have in place (e.g. good hygiene, ventilation and cleaning) will help reduce the spread of infection in your setting.
The schools/nurseries should contact their HPT on 0113 386 0300 or at yorkshirehumberHPT@UKHSA.gov.uk if:
- You have one or more cases of chickenpox or flu in the class that has scarlet fever at the same time. This is because infection with scarlet fever and either chickenpox or flu at the same time can result in more serious illness.
- You are experiencing an outbreak of scarlet fever in a setting / class that provides care or education to children who are clinically vulnerable.
- The outbreak continues for over 2 weeks, despite taking steps to control it.
- Any child or staff member is admitted to hospital with any Group A Strep (GAS) infection (or there is a death).
- Any issues that are making it difficult to manage the outbreak.
For any queries in regards scarlet fever, please contact the local HPT

The Government's response to the consultation on national funding formulae and increase in funding was published today. We will be digesting this over the Christmas holidays and will share with you what this means for providers in North Lincolnshire in the New Year.
In the meantime, if you employ a QTS/EYP/EYTS within your setting, please can you let us know via earlyyearsteam@northlincs.gov.uk

Flu can be horrible for young children and they can also spread it to those more vulnerable. That's why children aged 2-3 before September 2002 can have a free flu nasal spray vaccine.
Please share this message with your families using this poster and social media tile as Public Health would like to encourage families to take-up the vaccine over the Christmas break

Recently, there have been a a couple of Ofsted Inspection reports coming through with recommendations around settings helping children to learn how to stay safe when using online technology. Therefore, we thought it would be useful to share the resources below.
The Early years Ofsted Handbook (part 2 - Personal development: Good grade descriptor)
'Practitioners help children to gain an effective understanding of when they might be at risk, including when using the internet, digital technology and social media and where to get support if they need it'.
The Gov.uk- Help For practitioner's website states:
You should teach children about internet safety by:
- making them aware of what safe use of technology looks like
- choosing educational apps and platforms that help them to develop their skills
- having conversations and sharing advice with parents to encourage safe online use in the home
