It has been a busy term – our senior pupils have been working hard and concentrating on their final assessments and forthcoming exams. Our younger pupils have also been doing well and enjoying what they’ve been learning in the broad general education. The school has also enjoyed some great extra-curricular activities, some of which you can read about in this newsletter. We hope you have a peaceful spring break and look forward to seeing all our pupils back at school on 18th April 2017 at 8.55am. Good luck to all our senior pupils who will be studying and don’t forget that there is plenty of advice on the school website.

Our pupils have been enjoying cross country activities over the last few weeks. Two teams from Calderhead High School participated in the Scottish Schools Athletic Association Cross Country Championships at Dechmont Law on 5th March and contended with mud, biting wind, freezing rain and undulating ground to finish the course in good time. Teams from S1 –S3 also participated in the North Lanarkshire Schools Cross Country on 16th March. Well done to all the participants, particularly for coping with such challenging conditions.

Pupils at Calderhead High School marked World Book Day this
year by participating in a book quiz. Congratulations to Mrs Johnston’s S3
Maths class who answered all the questions correctly in the shortest time.
Pupils were also issued with World Book day tokens to swap for one of the
special World Book Day books or use to get £1 off any book.
The library assistants also created a beautiful book tree,
designed by Heather in S3. Pupils and staff noted their favourite books and
authors on paper ‘leaves’ and added them to the tree.

Senior pupils Ceinwyn, Samantha and Jason recently participated in the VEX Robotics challenge at New College Lanarkshire. The VEX Competitions are presented by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation and teams of students are tasked with designing and building a robot to play against other teams in a game-based engineering challenge. There was fierce competition and the Calderhead High team narrowly missed winning the challenge.
Calderhead High School’s S3 Robotics club (Dylan, Dale, Josh, Ethan, and Jamie) also attended the Tomorrow’s Engineers regional heat at West Lothian College. They competed in a teamwork bridge building challenge where they designed and built a bridge from scrap wood to successfully carry a car. The team were delighted to return with a trophy for their presentation on how robots can be used to help humans explore space. Well done to all our roboticists!

Calderhead High School’s Digital Leaders (S5 pupils Kaitlin, Michaela, Alana, Ceinwyn and Yoana) organised Safe Internet Day Assemblies and workshops for S1 - S3 pupils. The groups undertook a number of activities including a Mind Map station and informational video clips, followed by a quiz. |
Calderhead High School held a Careers event at school in
January. The ‘Friends of Calderhead’ (former pupils, parents and
relatives) gave a short 20 minute presentation detailing their own
personal experience of school and the journey they had taken leading them to
their current role. S3 pupils then had the opportunity to hear
insightful, inspiring, and honest representations of working in an industry
that they had expressed interest in. S1 and S2 pupils took part in a teacher
pathway quiz.
A traditional careers fayre was also held in the assembly hall, with
twenty one providers giving information to pupils, parents and carers, and
members of the community.

Holocaust Memorial Day is celebrated every year on 27 January
and we remember the six million Jewish people systematically persecuted
and murdered during the Holocaust and those who have faced persecution and
death since then. The theme this year was How
Can Life Go On?
Calderhead High School marked Holocaust Memorial Day with
assemblies for all pupils led by S6 pupils, Jamie and Chloe, who
visited Auschwitz in September 2016.
