St Maurice's in Malawi 2016

Malawi

A group of 11 pupils and 3 staff have just returned from another very successful trip to Nkhamenya, Malawi. Our partnership is still going strong, after almost 10 years!

The group managed to raise over £13,000 in total before the trip.  With these donations, the team offered support to the secondary school, two primaries, the local hospital and the church. These donations have ensured that electricity supplies continue in the secondary school, medicines are available in the hospital and an irrigation system is in place to sustain crop growth and food supply within the community. Our long term project is to examine the possibility of solar panels in the area.

During the visit, pupils and staff got involved in many activities - teaching classes, attending classes, painting classrooms, donating clothes packs to sick children in the local hospital.

The group were outstanding in all their efforts, they are a credit to their parents and families. All of the staff and friends of St. Maurice's are extremely proud of them and their achievements.

Many thanks for the pupils, parents, family members and friends who supported us on this unforgettable journey!

Glasgow Warriors Media Challenge Winners

media

Grace Houston and Heather Allan recently took part in a media challenge by coming along to the Glasgow Warriors Scottish Power Championship rugby tournament with the school of rugby teams. The girls had full access to the Glasgow warriors and interviewed a number of international players as well and gathering footage of how our teams got on.

The media challenge involved the girls submitting a two minute video package which included match footage and player interviews from our day at the Glasgow Warriors Scottish Power Championship. They also included a 100 word match report on how the game played out including the best bits of play and most memorable moments of the tournament.

Stripe Communications who ran the event arranged for a representative from Scottish Power to give the girls their prizes, vouchers for media equipment for both of them and the PE department.

Religious Education Department

Rome

Recently a group of 23 students from St. Maurice's went on a visit to Rome. Despite the huge crowds for the Jubilee Year of Mercy, the group enjoyed seeing Pope Francis, visiting St. Peter’s, the Catacombs, the Colosseum and the TimeElevator, as well as walking tours taking in such sights as the Spanish Steps, Circus Maximus and the Pantheon. Staying outside Rome in the English College villa, Villa Palazzola on Lake Albano, they could enjoy the freshness of the countryside and swimming in the pool. They also had the opportunity of visiting Frascati. Sustained by the fabulous Italian food, everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Youth Rally at Carfin Grotto

rally

A group of senior pupils from St Maurice's joined hundreds of other Scottish school pupils at an Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) youth rally at Carfin in June. They listened as Iraqi refugee, 20-year-old Sarman Ozan, who has been denied UK asylum after fleeing the horrors of Islamic State, called on Scots to support those trying to escape anti-Christian terror in his homeland and elsewhere. On hearing further stories of persecution the young people united in solidarity with those around the world being tortured for their Faith. They pledged financial support as well as prayed the Angelus, Rosary and before the Blessed Sacrament together. It was a powerful occasion not dampened by the heavy rain which soaked everyone at the outdoor event.

Salesian Sisters Retreat

Cumbernauld and Kilsyth School Un

A new service called Cumbernauld & Kilsyth School Uniform Bank - to help disadvantaged families in our local communities.

The community organisation want to ensure that every child has access toschool uniform and other school essentials that they need. They are currently raising funds and collecting donations from across Cumbernauld and Kilsyth to help meet those needs. Every school in the area has been contacted to ask to raise awareness of this new service, and to ask schools if they can recycle any lost property, items no longer needed and for school to be a collection point for parents to drop off donations. Please hand in any items to the school.
