Duncan Elliott: 'Our people are delivering positivity'
More than 550 people joined our Head of PPP Duncan Elliott and other members of our PPP team for the latest Team PPP Talks.
Duncan Elliott, and other of our PPP team, provided a partnership overview with updates from our major projects and health, safety and wellbeing team.
It was an opportunity for everyone across PPP to hear more about activities and new opportunities, as well as updates since we last came together in May.
Key themes included the positive impact the programme and our people are delivering, the value of collaborative working and continuing to forge strong relationships throughout our supply chain partners and communities, and working towards an inclusive partnership.
Duncan encouraged everyone to continue to embrace the partnership and explore the best practices that allow us to come together even more - developing and improving those relationships which enable us to flourish and successfully meet our goals.
Peggy Jackson, Health and Safety Manager; Steve Harnwell, Delivery Director for Major Projects; and Simon Wilcock, SIXEP Major Projects Portfolio Director, also provided updates from across PPP.
It was encouraging to see collaboration in action during the session, with people attending from across all Lot Partners, Client team, Key Delivery Partners and our wider supply chain community.

PPP launches improved supply chain opportunities platform
CompeteFor is a new platform PPP will use to link with supply chain partners and announce partnership news
Today, we are excited to announce that PPP has joined the CompeteFor platform, marking a significant milestone in our commitment to fostering robust collaboration between the partnership, our supply chain and potential future alliances.
CompeteFor is renowned for its facilitation of supply chain collaboration and opportunities. It connects organisations at every level across the UK and enables businesses to access and compete for contracts.
The move onto the online platform is designed to enhance our operational capabilities, streamline procurement processes and drive innovation. The supply chain will be able to engage with the page to stay up to date with the latest opportunities available on the programme and track what stage each procurement is up to.
We will also use the user-friendly hub to keep the supply chain up to date with the latest news from across the partnership.
John Rossiter, PPP’s Head of Supply Chain, said:
“Joining CompeteFor underscores our dedication to transparency, efficiency and inclusivity in all our operations. We are committed to building a more innovative and efficient procurement ecosystem and this network offers the perfect synergy to achieve that.”

Transforming a derelict nursery into new thriving community project
EJ Parker and Alpha colleagues at the Growing Well site
Green-fingered volunteers from EJ Parker have been helping to transform a redundant nursery in Egremont into a thriving market garden that will supply fresh vegetables to the local community.
The team, which included members from EJ Parker’s supply chain partner Alpha, helped mental health charity and organic farming enterprise Growing Well to clear land and lay new flagstones by the main site building and in one of the polytunnels.
They also moved compost to clear an area for a new cabin.
The community project will create five new full-time jobs, including vegetable growers and minibus drivers.
Growing Well’s ambition is to help 100 people a year across West Cumbria recover from mental health difficulties by attending the site once a week. They will also help supply 100 vegetables boxes to the local area, 50 of which will be sponsored or subsidised so low-income families can access them.

Emma is a PPP internship success story as she starts full-time role
Emma Jackson praises PPP intern scheme after landing a full-time role
From teaching assistant to intern and now a Change and Transformation Assistant, Emma Jackson is a success story for the PPP internship scheme.
After having her children while she was young, Emma decided to train to be a teaching assistant but was struggling to find full time work. This was when she spotted a Facebook post advertising the internship scheme and a chance to work for PPP.
Emma said:
“I wasn’t very confident and I didn’t think I would get an opportunity. I emailed my CV in and I got a reply saying I had been accepted into the Skills Academy, which was a four-week course. We had interviews for the intern roles afterwards. There were nine of us and five of us got placements. I started in October 2022 in a sustainability role.”
Emma spent time with the Sustainability and Training team before the Improvements and Benefits team wanted to extend her internship for three months to work with them.
In June she was taken on permanently, working within the Change and Transformations team which includes Improvements and Benefits, Social impact and Sustainability.
Emma, who is one of 22 interns to progress to a full-time position on PPP or in our supply chain, added that everyone has been really supportive throughout her internship and recommends it to others as a great career pathway.

Net Zero Week: Reducing carbon on PPP
Share and Learn focused on reducing PPP's carbon footprint
PPP has an important part to play in ensuring we minimise our environmental impact and enable Sellafield’s purpose to create a clean and safe environment for future generations to be achieved.
And we marked Net Zero week (6-12 July) with a special Share and Learn focusing on carbon management and reduction on PPP.
Andy Williams and Isabel Jess, PPP Carbon Managers, led the session and Paul Booth took everyone through a case study of the improvements we have already made.
Paul, Lead/Principal HVAC Engineer for BEPPS2 and LSS1, said:
“An engineer looks at what has been done before, and historically, we have maybe been reluctant to change what we know works for the fear of it not working. But we are pushing to become more sustainable and need to see what alternatives there are. The savings we have made are not just relevant to our project so it is useful to all. The carbon emission savings are the equivalent of planting 6,400 trees, which is not just a wood, but actually 40 times over the official requirement to be defined as a forest!”

Cleo Wilson enjoys the view from Bowness Knott
If you want to enjoy the fabulous Cumbrian scenery while staying fit and improving your mental health, then the new PPP Walk After Work group could be for you.

Cleo found a love of walking following the Covid-19 pandemic and now wants to bring that enthusiasm for outdoor challenges to more people.
As a former footballer she enjoys staying fit, but understands some may not want to walk alone, so this group was borne.

Book closes on successful year with Chapter One
With the academic year coming to a close, the award-winning volunteering with charity Chapter One is due to finish this month.
PPP, Sellafield Ltd and our supply chain partners have embraced the initiative over the last school year, with 280 people offering their time to help improve the reading levels of Cumbrian schoolchildren.
In total, over 300 pupils have been helped during around 2,000 hours of volunteering* from PPP, Sellafield Ltd and the wider supply chain. We wanted to say a huge thank you for your contributions this year, the time you have dedicated to helping your pupil improve their reading abilities really does make a considerable impact on their lives.
We spoke to some of our volunteers to find out what they enjoyed most about taking part this year.
Adam Rothery, Security Co-Ordinator at Morgan Sindall, added:
“From only one half an hour session a week, the development in my pupil’s reading is coming on week by week. I can see that she’s beginning to enjoy reading as she becomes more confident. It’s rewarding to be involved in her progress.”
Megan Paige, from Balfour Beatty Kilpatrick, said:
“It’s such a wonderful thing that Chapter One does to help children learn and improve their reading. I personally get a lot of fulfilment from it, and it really puts work into perspective sometimes.”
The chance to volunteer with Chapter One will reopen in the coming weeks as we look to support even more students during the next school year. More details on how to sign up and get involved will be made available soon.
*Reading ends in mid-July, where a final total will be calculated.

Celebrating two years of Share and Learn series
Over 7,000 people have attended PPP's Share and Learn series since it launched in 2022
Collaboration, expertise and engagement are all key to what has been a successful two years of the PPP Share and Learn series.
Since launching in 2022, we have covered 63 subjects, with almost 7,000 attendees and welcomed 28 external speakers.
The series is a welcoming, relaxed and informal platform to share learning on a broad range of topics to support PPP.
Sessions typically run fortnightly and are held on MS Teams, with invites shared throughout the PPP community.
Rebecca Ballantyne, Cultural Development Manager, who organises the Share and Learn series, said:
“One of the many benefits of being part of a collaborative environment is we’re able to expand our network's reach as we have access to a wider pool of knowledge than single organisations working in isolation. This unique position enables us to identify SMEs and expertise over a huge range of subjects, taking best practice and sharing the benefit throughout our PPP community. The series not only offers a platform to learn, but provides an opportunity to give something back. Through this approach we’ve welcomed an amazing range of diverse speakers over the last two years.”
Read more about the Share and Learn series here
The next two Share and Learn topics are:
- Tuesday, 23 July: 1.30pm-2.30pm - The PPP KDP model
- Thursday, 8 August: 1pm-2pm - Introducing the PPP Management System
MS Outlook calendar invitations, including MS Teams meeting links for Share and Learn sessions, are sent out to all PPP Colleagues, however, we encourage you to share invitations with people who are new to PPP, those who don’t have regular access to emails, and our wider supply chain partners.
Check your MS Outlook calendars and join through the MS Teams desktop app. You can also try to connect using the WebApp if you experience any problems.
