Teaching Assistant Conference 2020: What Makes Great Teaching Assistant Support? Thursday 6th February
Best known as one of the co-authors of the EEF's Teaching and Learning Toolkit and Sutton Trust's What makes great teaching? Professor Robert Coe was one of the first academics in the UK to argue for improving the research base for education. He advocates the development of evidence-based policies, evidence-based teaching, getting staff involved in research and promoting a general culture of evidence.
Teaching and Learning are delighted to welcome Professor Robert Coe, the Director of Research and Evaluation at Evidence Based Education, & consultant for the EEF.

Two Unique EAL and IT Workshops with Specialist Chris Pim Wednesday 26th February 2020 -These workshops, detailed below, organised by the IDEAL team will support delegates use of technology to make their EAL provision more engaging and exciting. Digital Tools to Support Learning Across the Curriculum (9am -12pm) - This hands-on workshop will introduce a range of free and low-cost digital tools to support access and engagement for pupils at the full range of proficiencies in learning EAL. Delegates will: • make a curriculum-related vocabulary learning activity• use QR codes to make an interactive resource• design and create a talking book (bilingual where possible)• produce a cartoon strip• record a digital story (bilingual where possible)• create a mini movie using iMovie trailers. reservations
Approaches to promote pupil voice and learner autonomy for those learning EAL (1pm-4pm) - This workshop will introduce delegates to a range of ideas to raise the profile of EAL learners and their families as well as developing learner autonomy in access to and engagement within the curriculum. Major themes encountered within this training include:• how to set up and run The Young Interpreter Scheme at your school• how to train EAL pupils to use their first language as a tool for learning across the curriculum. reservations
Training Reminder - GDPR training for DPOs - Understanding exemptions under the DPA 2018 and training your staff in the art of redaction. Looking at practical exercises to understand and practically apply the exemptions. Q and A session in GDPR and DPA 2018. From 1pm to 4pm, 23rd January 2020. GDPR overview training for all staff – Your school has an obligation to give all staff GDPR training annually. One of our data protection specialists can visit your school and give an overview of this legislation. Most schools and academies opt for the one hour overview at £250, this covers the basics but doesn’t give any time for Q&A. For more in depth you can choose two hour GDPR overview at £450 or three hours at £700. GDPR Compliant Blue Bags – Lockable bags should be used when colleagues need to transfer/transport hard copies of personal data securely. They are lockable and have the facility for you to label your return address in case of loss. We now have some new stock which are £12 each plus postage. Funding for Projects that Promote a Better Understanding of the Environment and Countryside - Schools can apply for funding to the Nineveh Charitable Trust for a broad range of projects and activities that promote a better understanding of the environment and countryside, whilst facilitating improved access, education and research. For example, St Joseph's Specialist School & College received a grant of £4,000 towards a community garden expansion. Applications can be submitted at any time. more info
Society for Microbiology: Science Education and Outreach Grants - Members of the Microbiology Society can apply for a grant of up to £1,000 for innovative Outreach Activities that support relevant science teaching or promotion initiatives. Grants can cover, talks, workshops, demonstrations, posters, leaflets, activities at science festivals and audio-visual or computer-based packages or activities that take place as part of a National Science and Engineering Week.
