Christmas message from John Dexter, Director of Education Christmas time (phew a holiday) fast approaches and schools will have been preparing and celebrating from carol services and concerts through to nativity plays, disruption, but nice disruption, threaded amongst the usual routines of school life. It can feel like a big challenge towards the end of term, especially trying hard to keep the children’s concentration and work rate up, squeezing as much learning as possible right to the end. For many teachers and support staff, but also pupils, there is a sense of running on empty and the adults may be wondering which of their many jobs should be done next. It is the season of hope and joy, giving and receiving and yet other emotions surround us all in the City knowing the many challenges within our communities...

Why not come to Wollaton Hall as part of Nottingham Festival of Science and Curiosity? - Wollaton Hall Sustainability Study Days, for secondary and upper primary pupils (Y5/Y6) take place Wednesday 13th– Friday 15th February 2019. The three study days are flexible for the ages of the young people attending and are on the theme of sustainability. There will be a tour of the hall, insect handling and outdoor activities as well as the presentation of research on the impact of humans on the environment and possible ways of reducing that impact. Empowering the Workforce to deliver Excellence in Safeguarding Practice 11th to 15th February 2019 - This week long event is open to everyone who works within the Children’s and Adults Workforce in the City of Nottingham, including Local Authority, Health, Schools, Police, Private, Voluntary and Community Agencies.  Places are free of charge and will be allocated to ensure there are representatives from across the City. GDPR overview training for all staff - Your school has an obligation to give all staff GDPR training annually.  If you would like to book or enquire about a session in your school next year contact frances.rowland@nottinghamcity.gov.uk 8764601.  Each one hour session costs £250 regardless of the number of staff that attend. 

GDPR training for your school’s DPO - Most schools have now had DPO training however if you would like to enquire or register your interest for this full day training session contact frances.rowland@nottinghamcity.gov.uk 8764601. In order for this to be viable we need a volume of DPOs to attend, once we have this we can arrange a date at Loxley House.

Out in Education -  Out in Education are a not-for-profit made up of students of the University of Nottingham which aims to create an inclusive environment at schools through educating pupils about LGBT issues, encouraging tolerance and diversity and promoting an anti-bullying agenda. They can deliver workshops to help foster an inclusive environment within school. All workshops, delivered at no cost, are designed to put young people at ease and allow them to ask questions which they may not otherwise find answers to. Find out more

Free Breakfasts – Most Nottingham City Schools are eligible for free breakfasts.  Funded by the ‘sugar tax’ schools are eligible for support if they currently have either no breakfast provision or breakfast provision if there is scope for improvement and 50% or more pupils are in IDACI bands A-F. To find out if your school is on the eligibility contact:  frances.rowland@nottinghamcity.gov.uk 0115 8764601. For those schools who use Cares for Kids this programme will cease in July 2019 but you should be able to transition to Magic Breakfast by applying for funding here.
