Spring into Science 2017 - A team of experts from the University’s School of Physics and Astronomy, led by Professors Edmund Copeland and Philip Moriarty, provided lively lectures and interactive demonstrations on sound and resonance designed to capture the children’s imagination. Some of the demonstrations included: musical lightning – making music using electrical sparks from a Tesla coil, acoustic levitation - balls suspended in the air using sound waves and an experiment where glass is broken using only sound. Nottingham All Together Programme - Nottingham City Council is working with the anti-bullying alliance and Nottinghamshire County Council to provide a very exciting opportunity for schools to become All Together Schools. An All Together School is one that has proven its activity to reduce bullying of all children. The All Together programme has been developed over the last three years and builds upon the work of the Anti-Bullying Alliance’s previous SEND anti-bullying champion programme which saw significant positive results. The first training event will take place on Tuesday 16th May at the College Street Centre. Building skills, knowledge and confidence in KS2 RSE delivery - There is still some availability for the above course being delivered in May and June by the PSHE Advisory Service. The course will focus on the principles of effective Relationships and Sex Education for those delivering in Key Stage 2. The day will be practical in nature with an emphasis on developing skills in delivery, building required knowledge, and increasing confidence. The course is suitable for staff who have little experience in delivering SRE or those who need to build their confidence or skills. The course will take place at College Street Centre on Wednesday 17th May or Tuesday 6 June, from 9am to 4pm. This is free to schools that have signed the City SRE Charter and £200 for other City and County schools. Diabetes Awareness Training for School and Social Care Staff - Diabetes Awareness training is available on Tuesday 23rd May from 1pm to 5pm at the Poppy and Pint in West Bridgford. Grant Opportunity - New Grant to Mark the Centenary of WWI. Schools that wish to develop projects that improve the understanding of World War I can apply for grants of between £3,000 and £10,000 through the Heritage Lottery Fund’s (HLF) new £6million small grants programme “First World War: then and now”. My Beautiful Nottingham Art and Photography competitions - Nottingham in Bloom is running new photography and art competitions to celebrate the beautiful green landscapes and corners of Nottingham. Keen young artists, along with photographers of all ages, are invited to take inspiration from the city’s abundance of parks, gardens, local landmarks, flowers, trees and nature through the seasons. Sharewear has launched a Schools Partnership Programme - Sharewear is a local charity, providing clothing and bedding for referred families in crisis. They have opened a partnership scheme to build relationships with schools and colleges, which allow them to refer children and families for the services that Sharewear provide. As well as this, they provide volunteering opportunities and educational sessions on themes relevant to the charity. A number of settings have already joined the scheme including: Bilborough Sixth Form College, New College Nottingham, The Trinity School and Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Catholic Primary School.
