We hope you enjoyed a well deserved break and are looking forward to 2017.  We anticipate a range of announcements over the coming months relating to Local Authority funding, school funding arrangements, assessment and reporting processes and the ongoing Grammar school debate. We will endeavour to relay appropriate information to you as the year progresses. In the meantime there will be plenty to get our teeth stuck into over the coming year and, as ever, we remain excited by what might be achieved this year.

Important information on managing your school gates - All Head Teachers & Senior Leaders - Changes to education across the City have seen new schools being built and many extended to accommodate the demand for pupils places. As part of these changes, sometimes the school entrances are changed, altered, become redundant or school operation times change. A vital part of keeping our children safe to and from School is a clear visible entrance free from vehicles with school Entrance Clearways (Zig Zags) and Pedestrian Safety Barrier in situ. Every parent wants their children to get to school safely, and Nottingham City Council’s Traffic and Safety would encourage you to keep them informed of any changes that may affect your school entrances so that we can help address any potential issues before they arise. A vital aspect of encouraging children to walk is their safety. Children learn and discover vital road safety skills through education and adult interaction.

We are here to assist with:

  • School Travel Plans
  • Any potential Traffic Management proposals for your area which may affect your current arrangements
  • All Road Safety Education.
  • Lifecycle and Bikeability.

If you need any further information or advice please contact road.safety@nottinghamcity.gov.uk or traffic.management@nottinghamcity.gov.uk

Apprentices in Schools - From April 2017 the way apprenticeships are funded is changing as part of a series of wider reforms to the apprenticeship system in England. Employers with a pay bill of more than £3m will be required to pay an apprenticeship levy. In England employers who pay the levy will be able to access funding for apprenticeship training and assessment via a new Digital Apprenticeship Service. Available funding can be used to meet the cost of apprenticeship training and assessment against an approved apprenticeship framework or standard. This can be for both existing employees as well as new starters. Below is the briefing note about Apprenticeships in schools. http://www.nottinghamschools.org.uk/scene/january-2017-scene-articles/

6th Annual East Midlands Primary Languages Conference - Earlier this year Ofsted chief Sir Michael Wilshaw commented that Primary Languages are marginalised.  He went on to mention that it shouldn’t be an either/or situation and that “excellent teaching in subjects like foreign languages and science promotes good literacy and numeracy skills. This complements, rather than detracts from, the focus on English and mathematics."  The packed programme for the 6th annual East Midlands Primary Languages Conference will inspire your teachers, helping them to provide engaging lessons which will not only boost your pupils’ literacy skills, but also instil in them an abiding interest and curiosity in the subject. This annual conference, which offers high profile national speakers as well as showcasing local talent, represents tremendous value for money and is always very well received by delegates.  Feedback from last year’s event included this comment: “Thanks for such a fantastic day yesterday.  There was such a superb variety of workshops and the quality was of the highest order.  It’s always brilliant to come away from somewhere feeling motivated and inspired.” The conference takes place on January 18th at the Nottingham Conference Centre at Nottingham Trent University.  Places are filling up so don’t miss out on this opportunity.  The attached flyer gives full details of the keynote speaker, workshop sessions and timings and information on how to book your place.  In the meantime if you require any further information, please contact Jo Darley by emailing emlangspartnership@gmail.com or click on the following link: http://www.nottinghamschools.org.uk/scene/december-2016-scene-articles/#CONFERENCE
