As we approach one year since the launch of Team Around the Family (TAF), we are taking the opportunity to reflect on the progress made, celebrate achievements, and share updates that continue to support our collective commitment to children, young people, and families in Nottingham.
This month has seen some fantastic examples of partnership working and early intervention in action. We are delighted to welcome new partners to the TAF journey, supporting families through assessments, TAF meetings and successful school transitions. We also celebrated a milestone with the first TAF initiated by a Day Care Provider, Wollaton House Day Nursery, highlighting the growing commitment to collaborative support across early years settings.
We have also welcomed opportunities to work more closely with colleagues across the city, including requests for bespoke TAF training and awareness sessions. Thank you to all our partners for your continued commitment to supporting Nottingham's children and families.
Did you know that there are an estimated 800,000 young carers in the UK? Young carers are children and young people who help to care for a family member who may have a physical illness, disability, mental health condition, or substance misuse issue.
This month, we are shining a spotlight on the support available for young carers across Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire.
Nottinghamshire Carers work closely with schools to help identify young carers, ensuring they receive the recognition, understanding, and support they deserve. The team provides guidance and resources to schools, helping them create environments where young carers can thrive both academically and emotionally.
Alongside identifying and supporting young carers, Nottinghamshire Carers also celebrates their achievements, raises awareness of the challenges they face, and helps them access opportunities to connect with others who share similar experiences.
By recognising young carers early, we can ensure they receive the right support and are able to enjoy the same opportunities as their peers while continuing the valuable role they play within their families.
What We Offer Schools
We work hand-in-hand with schools across Nottinghamshire and Nottingham City to help identify, support, and celebrate Young Carers. Our services are free, flexible, and tailored to your school's needs.
Our Core Services
- Staff Training & CPD - Equip your team to spot and support Young Carers.
- Assemblies & PSHCE Lessons - Age-appropriate sessions to raise awareness and reduce stigma.
- Network meetings
- Carer Friendly Quality Mark - Recognise your school’s commitment to Young Carers.
- 1:1 School Liaison Support - Ongoing guidance from our dedicated team.
Why It Matters
Young carers are all around us, but many remain unseen and unsupported. By recognising their unique challenges and providing the right support, schools can become a vital lifeline, helping to improve attendance, wellbeing, confidence and educational achievement.
Young Carer Awareness Training
Nottinghamshire Carers Association is offering free online Young Carer Awareness Training sessions for professionals working with children, young people, and families. The following sessions are available:

Monday 21 September – 10:00am to 11:00am

Tuesday 13 October – 2:00pm to 3:00pm

Wednesday 25 November – 11:00am to 12:00pm

Thursday 10 December – 3:00pm to 4:00pm

When a child or young person’s behaviour becomes aggressive, harmful or difficult to manage, family life can feel overwhelming. Parents and carers often feel isolated, judged or unsure where to turn.
Capa provides compassionate, specialist and non-blaming support to help families understand what is happening, increase safety, rebuild confidence and strengthen relationships.
We support families with children and young people up to 18, and up to 25 where there is diagnosed or suspected neurodivergence.

As part of our ongoing efforts to spread TAF awareness across services, we have been looking at new and engaging ways to share information. We are delighted to launch the new TAF E-Learning Module, designed to help practitioners develop their understanding of the TAF approach at a time and pace that suits them.
This self-led workshop has been designed to provide external services with an overview of the Team Around the Family (TAF) process, the role of the Lead Professional, and how your allocated TAF Advisor can support you.
The workshop is suitable for all staff and can be accessed using the link below. Some staff may need to create an account if new to using our Learning Zone.

Please note that you must pass the quiz for the workshop to be marked as complete.
Once you have successfully completed the workshop, you will be able to access further training, including TAF Lead Professional Training, which can be booked via asktaf@nottinghamcity.gov.uk or your allocated TAF Advisor.
In addition, your TAF Advisor is available to meet with you to discuss how TAF can be implemented within your setting and to explore how the approach could support any families you are working with.
This month, we are delighted to welcome a number of our Day Care Providers to Lead Professional Training. It has been fantastic to see such positive engagement already, with valuable conversations taking place about how families can be supported through the Team Around the Family (TAF) approach.
This week Hayley Voce, First Response Family Help Worker reached out to share her Praise ‘Just want to praise My Start Day Nursery - Tracey Nunley for the TAF support they are putting in place for a family I am screening’.
Well done to My Start Day Nursery, identifying and providing the right support and the right time.

It is always wonderful to receive positive feedback from our Lead Professional Training. Thank you to St Augustine's Primary Catholic Academy for taking the time to share your feedback.
‘I attended the Teams Around the Family (TAF) training and found it to be excellent. It was informative, supportive, and incredibly insightful. The activities and clear explanations really helped me understand the purpose of TAF and the positive, lasting impact it can have on families when support is provided in a collaborative and strengths-based way.
A huge thank you to the facilitators for sharing their knowledge, expertise, and experience. They created a welcoming learning environment and encouraged meaningful discussion throughout the session.
The training also highlighted how the TAF support plan aims to provide families with the right support at the right time, helping to reduce the need for statutory social care intervention wherever possible. I left the training with a much clearer understanding of the TAF approach and how effective multi-agency working can make a real difference for children and families’.
