Safer Sleep Week

This week is Safer Sleep Week which runs from 11-17th March 2019 and it is a national campaign to raise awareness about safe sleeping for babies.

The campaign is led by the Lullaby Trust and its aim is to make sure anyone looking after a baby knows the importance of safer sleep and are aware of how to reduce the chance of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).  To find out more about the campaign please click here.

In Nottinghamshire there are 6 deaths on average each year of babies (up to 15 months old) that are likely to be due to an unsafe sleep environment.  These deaths are potentially preventable.  This demonstrates the importance of getting the message about safe sleeping to people caring for babies.

You can watch a video about safer sleep for babies here or click on the image above.  If you work with parents or carers of babies then you could watch this short video with them.

The video has also been added to the new NCSCB Video Resources page of our website so you can find it there too.

Training on Safer Sleep for Babies

Nottingham City Council are working with the Lullaby Trust to provide safer sleeping training for colleagues from all sectors who work with families with babies.

This free training from is taking place on 4th April from 10am until 1pm in room LH2.11 in Loxley House, Station Street, Nottingham, NG2 3NG.

This session is open to all practitioners who work with families with babies. It is especially relevant to workers who engage with families in their homes. Colleagues from Children’s Social Care, Targeted Support, Early Help, and Housing Providers will benefit from this training and are encouraged to attend.

(Please Note: the training is not intended for use by maternity and health visiting services who should continue to assess and promote safe sleep via the usual processes).

The aims of the training are to:

  • Explain what safer sleep is and help you identify risk factors for unsafe sleeping
  • Explain what guidance to give carers to ensure they are putting babies to sleep safely
  • Explain what Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is (SIDS)
  • Highlight the risk factors for SIDS

Supporting Families

Nottingham City Safeguarding Children Board and Nottinghamshire Safeguarding Children Board have developed the Safer Sleeping Risk Assessment Tool to support practitioners to identify if parents or carers are putting a baby to sleep in an unsafe way.

A self-directed learning session has also been developed to help practitioners learn about:

  • what guidance to give carers to ensure they are putting babies to sleep safely
  • Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
  • the risk factors for SIDS

Please click here to access the Risk Assessment Tool and learning session (please note that you will need to scroll to the bottom of the web page)
