 Introduction from Councillor Sally Longford
My role as
Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services and Local Transport gives me the opportunity to support
Nottingham's work to encourage people to switch to more sustainable transport, and,
being an electric car owner myself, puts me in an good position to focus on Ultra-Low Emission Vehicles (ULEVs) in particular. I have recently taken on responsibility for Clean Air in
the City, and clearly electric vehicles have the potential to make a real
contribution to reducing nitrogen dioxide as we are tasked to do.
This last month we've seen the first ultra low emission Hackney Carriage begin work in Nottingham, and we hope to see more coming soon!

First LEVC electric taxi outside London!
In March, the London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC)
delivered the first electric taxi outside London to a local Hackney Cab driver in
Nottingham. The vehicle has been designed to offer a typical fuel saving of £100
per week (see cost comparison: http://www.levc.com/tx-cost-comparison/), while
contributing to improving the city’s air quality.
The proud owner of the new cab, Amer Alam, said; “I did my
first shift in it and the response was amazing. The drive was beautiful, the
passengers were enjoying it and it's a lot more comfortable. It's bringing the
Hackney trade back into the 21st Century, where we need to be.”
We hope that the response to this vehicle will convince more
drivers to take the step in converting to electric!

City’s first electric bin lorries on the way!
The
first electric bin lorries will take to the streets of Nottingham later this
year thanks to a £1.5m grant in a bid to become the largest Ultra Low Emission
Vehicle fleet in the country by 2020.
The
City Council successfully bid for the funding from the Government’s Joint Air
Quality Unit’s (JAQU) Early Measures Fund to support the conversion of 29
lorries and street sweepers to ULEVs.
The
grant will contribute towards the replacement of four bin lorries, 10 electric
street sweepers and 15 small electric cage tippers – used to collect waste
every day in the city centre and residential areas. The new and converted
vehicles are expected to come into operation later this year.
Not
only will the new vehicles help reduce air pollution; electric vehicles are also
cheaper to run and to maintain, delivering significant cost savings for the
council.
The
council already has 37 fully electric small cars and light vans in operation
across the city, and aims to have 142 ULEVs by 2020 – representing 28 per cent
of the total fleet.
