Be Share Aware

The NSPCC have made the following video to raise awareness and to give parents and carers the confidence and skills to talk to their children about staying safe online. 

 If you work with parents or carers then you could watch this short video with them and talk about how they can make sure their children are staying safe online.  To go alongside that, the NCSCB has guides on staying safe online – there is one for children and young people, and one for parents and carers, which can be found here.

Learning from Serious Case Review

The Nottingham City Safeguarding Children Board (NCSCB) has recently issued a briefing note in response to the learning from the Child J Serious Case Review. The aim of the briefing note is to share key learning across the NCSCB partnership to inform frontline practitioners of the issues identified by the review and learning that can be applied to improve practice.

To use the briefing note, please:

• Read it carefully and consider the learning in respect of current families you are working with.
• Keep it in a handy place to support easy reference in future work.
• Take it to team meetings and share with colleagues.
• Use it in supervisions for reference and to support case management / reflective practice.

NCSCB Multi-Agency Audits

The NCSCB routinely undertakes multi-agency audits to assess the effectiveness of safeguarding arrangements in Nottingham.  These audits are overseen by the Quality Assurance Sub-Group, chaired by Liz Tinsley from the NSPCC.  We thought it would be useful to periodically share with you some of the headlines from these audits - our most recent audit focused on medical neglect .

• There is clear evidence of the 'Was Not Brought'  campaign and the new medical neglect guidance being implemented; and workers proactively sharing and raising concerns with families and the professional network. 
• We are developing a self-assessment audit tool for schools, to support the management of safeguarding files.
• It has been really pleasing to see consistent evidence of  the voice of the child / young person being sought and captured in records.
• We are looking at the possibility of developing a podcast type communication focussing on the principals of what makes a quality referral.

Consultation - draft guidelines for sentencing offenders who are guilty of child cruelty

The Sentencing Council for England and Wales has launched a consultation paper on child cruelty which will run until 13 September 2017.

The consultation paper seeks views on new guidelines for offences of cruelty to a child, causing or allowing a child to die or suffer serious physical harm and failing to protect a girl from the risk of female genital mutilation (FGM).

This guideline is an expansion on the existing child cruelty guideline and for the first time there will be guidelines available for the newer offences of causing or allowing a child to die or suffer serious physical harm and failing to protect a girl from the risk of FGM.

Keep them safe: an interactive CSE learning tool

Keep them safe is a free e-learning course from Pace and Virtual College aimed at parents and carers to help them to:

• find out more about child sexual exploitation
• learn the signs and indicators of when a child might be being exploited
• understand the impact child sexual exploitation can have on families
• know what to do if you suspect a child might be at risk of this abuse.

Please share the e-learning with any parents and carers you are working with to help them increase their understanding of child sexual exploitation. The e-learning takes about 20-30 minutes, and you can find out more about it here
