Dear Colleague
Welcome to the November edition of our newsletter and our last one for 2025! It’s been an eventful year and a busy and exciting month, with lots of activities designed to connect research with policy. We were proud to host the annual National Safeguarding Conference Wales online, bringing together hundreds of researchers and policy practitioners to share the latest insights shaping safeguarding policy in Wales and beyond. We were also delighted to support the Elevating Young People’s Voices in Healthcare Summit - an evening event following the Institute for Children’s Futures’ (ICF) conference on children’s rights and part of a full day of activities marking World Children’s Day.
Our longstanding training partner, Showrunner Communications, delivered an online workshop for our researchers on communicating effectively with policymakers and strengthening their professional social media profiles. We also welcomed Sarah O’Meara from Universal Impact (part of The Conversation team), who delivered a first-of-its-kind training session on influencing policy. If you are a Manchester Met researcher who missed any of these opportunities please do check our upcoming training workshops for next year detailed below.
Read on to learn how we’re working with Professor Annapurna Waughray to advance efforts to secure legal recognition of caste discrimination. In our spotlight feature, discover how we’re supporting Professor Stefan White as he contributes to the World Health Organization’s global strategy on healthy ageing.
From championing stronger protections against caste discrimination to amplifying the voices of young people and those with lived experience in safeguarding and healthcare, our latest activities highlight the power of research in shaping fairer, more responsive systems.

In this month’s blog, Professor Carol Atkinson examines the Fair Pay Agreement (FPA) for adult social care workers, asking how effective it will be and whether it can help resolve the chronic underpayment and high staff turnover that have long plagued the sector. |

We're delighted to support Professor Stefan White, one of MetroPolis’ former Chancellor’s Fellows, as he travels to The Hague to share his expertise with the World Health Organization (WHO). Stefan is Professor of Architecture and Co-Director of A3RO - the Advanced and Applied Architectural Research Office. He brings extensive knowledge in age-friendly and inclusive design to an international forum shaping the future of healthy ageing.
The meeting will play a pivotal role in advancing the WHO’s regional agenda on ageing. Key objectives include presenting the draft WHO European Strategy on Ageing and its evidence base and inviting participants to co-develop a regional research agenda to 2030. A major anticipated outcome is the creation of a WHO Research Network on Healthy Ageing to strengthen collaboration, coordinated research, and knowledge exchange across the European Region.
Professor Stefan White has said he is "Delighted to be collaborating with Greater Manchester Combined Authority and the World Health Organisation in our work to support older citizens across Europe to live longer healthier lives in places of their choosing. This builds on policy work begun as a Chancellors’ Fellow with Metropolis in 2017 which itself was developed through collaboration with Manchester City Council beginning in 2006"
Stefan will contribute specifically to discussions on age-friendly environments, as well as to the drafting of the WHO/European strategy titled Ageing is Living: Promoting a Lifetime of Health and Well-being (2026–2030). This is an area where Greater Manchester (GM) is increasingly recognised as a global leader, with its healthy ageing ecosystem bringing together communities, practitioners, researchers, and policymakers to address the multiple determinants of health in place. Stefan is exceptionally well placed to share learning and insight from Manchester’s experience and ongoing leadership in this field.
