Dear Colleague
The MetroPolis Matters newsletter is here! We have plenty of exciting news to share with you. We are delighted to announce that the MetroPolis Magazine will soon be available, published both online and in print. Printed copies will be available for pickup at the events we are organising and supporting in the coming months.
We are hosting a series of impactful events, from policy summits on children’s health and local economies to training sessions on engaging with Parliament. One highlight is the Criminal Justice Research Symposium, which we are proud to co-host with the Criminal Justice Alliance (CJA). This event will bring together experts and policymakers to explore ways to create a safer justice system. You can find out more in our spotlight feature on Annette So, Director of the Criminal Justice Alliance, with whom we are working to deliver this event.
Beyond the relaunch of MetroPolis Magazine, we are also pleased to announce the introduction of a new type of Chancellor’s Fellowship aimed at policy professionals. This initiative will enable them to collaborate with researchers to bridge the gap between research and policymaking. MetroPolis has also supported an interdisciplinary sandpit event with Manchester Law School, read about this and more below.
Additionally, our colleagues at the Manchester Centre for Youth Studies (MCYS) are advertising a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Youth Justice Associate position. This is a 36-month opportunity to work with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, focusing on developing, implementing, and evaluating a child-focused justice approach across the GMCA and its relevant partners.
With so much happening at MetroPolis, we are excited to continue supporting research that drives real policy impact. Stay tuned and follow us on social media for more updates!

Kevin Wong’s blog summarises key arguments from his research evaluating voluntary sector women’s services, published in the Prison Service Journal for International Women’s Day 2025. He critiques conventional evaluation approaches, particularly the over-reliance on reoffending rates and randomised trials, arguing instead for a realist approach that considers "what works, for whom, in what circumstances, to what extent, and why" in order to formulate better policy. |

Today's spotlight is on CJA Director Annette So, with whom we are proud to be working to co-host our Criminal Justice Research Symposium, exploring how we can create a safer justice system. This event will feature a range of researchers from Manchester Met, alongside key policy figures, including Dr Kay Lalor, Professor Michelle McManus, and Dr Jamie Bennett - former prison governor and Chief Operating Officer of the Youth Justice Board, now a Group Director at HM Prison and Probation Service.
Annette So writes:
"We are delighted to be co-hosting our 2025 research symposium, A Safer Criminal Justice System, with Manchester Metropolitan University. We hope to bring together and connect academics, researchers, students, frontline practitioners, policymakers, and people directly impacted by the system to share best practices and explore evidence-led, practical solutions."
