Dear Colleague
Welcome to our first monthly round-up of policy news from MetroPolis, Manchester Met’s research-led think-tank. Stay on top of what’s happening with updates on all our latest projects, blogs and events, keeping you informed of the fantastic policy impact activity taking place at the University.
Since our re-launch in February, we have been busy providing support for colleagues across the University including:
- £30,000 of funding to help develop new policy impact
- A series of sell-out training and guest speaker events
- Government training around policy labs and sprints
- Individual policy coaching for colleagues across the University
- Supporting events in Westminster and submissions to Select Committees
- Partnering with New Economy North (NENs), a group of northern think tanks- including IPPR North and Centre for Local Economic Strategies (CLES) - aimed at sharing ideas, opportunities and work.
As we move into summer, we are planning more exciting activities and events, all of which can be found via our website, Twitter and LinkedIn. In the meantime if you have any questions or ideas you would like to share, please do not hesitate to contact me.

We've been thrilled to support Professor Michelle McManus (Professor of Safeguarding and Violence Prevention), who recently joined Manchester Met from Liverpool John Moores University. Michelle has undertaken a range of important policy-related work, including:
-
A Thematic Review of Child Practice Reviews in Wales, which has made key recommendations on, for example, changes to the process of Child Practice Reviews and legislative guidance, and also on key training to be prioritised to safeguarding practitioners across Wales.
-
An evaluation of Operation Provide, a co-responder model between Immediate Response Police Officers and Health (IDVAs), in responding to domestic abuse victims. This was selected as Best Practice Model by the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) as part of the National Homicide Prevention Framework.
- Two large scale research and evaluation projects focused on county lines evaluation. One project- funded by the Home Office and Department for Education- led to a recommendation for the development of a Local Children and Young People Exploitation Strategy.
Of MetroPolis' support, Michelle commented, 'the policy coaching sessions are helping me to carve out the key policy findings within my work and target them more specifically, getting them heard in the right places."
