Introduction to Councillor Beverley Nielsen

Cllr Beverley Nielsen

Cllr Beverley Nielsen has been appointed as our new Portfolio Holder for Economic Development and Tourism following her election to Malvern Hills District Council in May.

Beverley was born in Malvern Wells and moved back to raise her own family here over 20 years ago. She works at Birmingham City University as Associate Professor through her think tank, IDEA Institute, helping start-ups to grow and commercialise new products.

She has previous experience promoting tourism as CEO of the Heart of England Tourist Board and set up Boundless Outdoors in Malvern in 2012. This community company has since doubled in size, promoting outdoor activities to over 5,000 young people each year. She is passionate about our beautiful countryside, local habitats and our very special environment.

Beverley also has a strong interest in local business and the economy, having worked as Regional Director for the CBI West Midlands and as FTSE-250 Director for AGA Rangemaster plc and MD of subsidiary retail business, Fired Earth.

She said: "We live in a very special part of the world where we continue to combine creativity and ingenuity to safeguard and improve our quality of life, most recently with cutting edge breakthroughs in 5G and cyber security, whilst continuing to lead the way in many areas of advanced manufacturing."

Her priorities include promoting business growth, refreshing the district’s high streets and ensuring young people and emerging talent are linked into opportunities available.

Investing in Growth

A limited number of business growth grants of £20,000 minimum value to a maximum of £35,000 are now available.

The grants are capital only and are offered at 45% of total project value. The match funding aims to support SMEs to grow their business through increased productivity or new market development.

As the programme closes in September 2019 these grants are for SMEs with projects that: are ready to implement now; are able to quickly meet ERDF procurement requirements, and will complete and be fully claimed by the end of August 2019. An ideal project for example would be machinery or similar one off capital purchases.

Don't miss the opportunity to invest in your system security with the help of a Be Cyber Secure Grant.

Is your software still supported? How old and efficient is your server and back up processes? Do you need Cyber Essentials accreditation to win new contracts?

The last few capital & revenue match funded grants of £2,000 to £20,000 are ready to be allocated to local SMEs for updates and improvements to their IT and data system security. The grants are available to those trading predominantly business to business and may cover 45% of the necessary investment.

The Data and Systems Security Business Support Programme


Would your business benefit from improved protection against data breaches and compromised security? Are you confident your business is compliant with all aspects of GDPR? This NEW support programme could answer all these questions and more - and it’s completely FREE.

The Data and Systems Security Programme has been launched to offer practical support for Worcestershire SME’s to protect and improve their data and physical security, enable business growth and achieve cyber accreditation through free specialist advice provided by borwell Ltd , secure software experts, and CyberTech Digital Ltd.

Broadband for Rural Communities - Gigabit Voucher Scheme

Rural Gigabit

As part of the Government’s Rural Gigabit Connectivity programme, businesses and residents in rural parts of the UK (most of Malvern Hills district is classed as rural, other than Malvern town area) can claim additional funding towards the cost of installing gigabit-capable broadband to their premises when part of a group project.

Rural premises with broadband speeds of less than 30Mbps can use vouchers worth up to £3,500 for each small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), and up to £1,500 per residential premise to support the cost of installing new gigabit-capable connections.

Group projects are eligible for this funding, these are when two or more residents and/or SMEs get together to combine their vouchers towards the shared cost of installation. Single connections are not eligible for this additional funding.

Train 4 Success - Free Training

Train 4 Success

Train 4 Success is offering FREE training to businesses.

The project offers employed workers who are over 50 years of age and based in Worcestershire FREE training to upskill or retrain to benefit both the business and the employee. Worcestershire College Group (WCG) is able to offer this training free of charge as the project is funded by the European Social Fund and match-funded by WCG.

Train 4 Success have the ability to offer accredited and non-accredited training in a wide range of subject areas from IT & computing, first aid and risk assessment training to land-based subjects such as engineering, plumbing and agriculture. The courses will run at one of their three Worcestershire College sites: Malvern Hills, Evesham or Pershore.

Nominations are now open for the 2019 Worcestershire Apprenticeship Awards. 

All apprentices, apprenticeship employers, schools and training providers in Worcestershire are being encouraged to submit their nominations via the new online nomination process, before the 12 July deadline.

There are apprentice awards, employer awards and support awards. If you are a previous winner you can still enter and you can nominate yourself.

The Enterprising Worcestershire Awards will showcase the fantastic array of businesses that have started-up and are thriving in Worcestershire and that have benefitted from the support offered through the Enterprising Worcestershire programme. 

Businesses that have accessed support through the programme since September 2017 are eligible to enter a range of award categories.

Inspiring Growth - Journey to Success

“Inspiring Growth – Journey to Success” is a dynamic business support campaign created by Worcestershire Business Central to support the Growth of SMEs in Worcestershire that have strong ambitions, an entrepreneurial spirit, and are looking to maximise their opportunities inside and out of the County.

The aim of the event is to provide companies with information on key issues to consider at each various stages of the growth of a business which is directly linked to the number of employees in a company. In Worcestershire 80% of SMEs employ between 1-10 people, but SMEs of any size should consider four key pillars of Strategy, People, Execution of Strategy and Cash during the “Journey to Success”. At the event the audience will be introduced to the ‘Journey’ in partnership with Bizsmart, hear from the business who is going through their own ‘Journey’ and speakers who will cover the “Four Pillars” in more detail. Companies will then discuss, debate and take actions away to then implement into their company.
