Big applause for Muskan in Year 8—our Star Book Reviewer of the Month!
Muskan’s review of My Sister is Missing by Sophie McKenzie is packed with insight and energy, spotlighting what makes this gripping mystery must-read. Their words leapt off the page and made us want to dive straight into the book ourselves!
Note: Recommended for ages 12+ (based on publisher and literacy guidance). We encourage a parent, carer or trusted adult to review the book to ensure suitability for individual readers
The full review will be accessible on the Manchester Young Carers Zone webpages coming soon!

It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces and we know the books will continue to be enjoyed by young carers and their families at home!

They had lots of fun playing board games and getting to meet new members of their Young Carers Group – a lovely reminder to all children that you are not alone, and that they have a community of young carers and all have a friend in Strawberry.
If you would like Strawberry the Cat to visit your school or venue, you can find more details on how to request a FREE booking later in this newsletter.

Celebrate Carers Week with Award-Winning KS2 Author Rab Ferguson, including reading & alien-making! KS2 Assembly on Tuesday 9th June 10am-10.45am
To celebrate Carers Awareness Week and the National Year of Reading, join award-winning author Rab Ferguson on Tuesday 9th June from 10am-10.45am for a morning of amazing aliens and out of this world adventures! In this special interactive event, Rab will read from The Late Crew, where young carers meet aliens, and talk about why he chose young carers as the heroes of the story. This event is suitable for all of Key Stage 2, and will support raising young carer awareness in your school while engaging children with an exciting book series.
Rab Ferguson claims he has never met an alien in real life, but we can't be sure. He's the author of the award-winning The Late Crew series (Best Independent Young Reader 2023, Children's Literature Festival Book Awards, & Kindness in Action Award 2025, MyTime Young Carers Community Hero Award) about young carers and aliens.
When not writing, he works for the National Literacy Trust, supporting children and families to read together, and encouraging everyone to join in with the National Year of Reading! www.thelatecrew.co.uk

The Young Carers in School Award was created in partnership with schools that truly understand the everyday realities faced by young carers. This initiative is about making sure every young carer is visible, supported, heard and celebrated. The award follows a clear six-step model, aligning seamlessly with existing school activities, and provides all the tools, resources and templates you’ll need.
You can access the Manchester Young Carers in Schools Award here.
If you’re interested in learning more, we’re here to help—schools can book a call or an in-person visit with Kelly Hockaday, our Young Carers Operational Lead, for a guided walk-through of the award and its benefits. Email araya.worsley@manchester.gov.uk.
Together, let’s make a lasting difference for young carers in our communities.
