School Young Carer Champions Network Meeting Update
A Big thank you to everyone who attended the latest Young Carer Champions Network meeting, held virtually on Monday 12th January 2026.
The session provided a platform for champions to come together, share good practice, explore opportunities for young carers to be involved in, and continue strengthening our support across the city.
During the meeting, we discussed updated guidance and key information relating to the Spring School Census, welcomed contributions from our partners at The Rio Ferdinand Foundation, and The Honey Pot Charity, who provided insight into the support, activities, and opportunities available for young carers through their organisations.
Thank you to all who joined and contributed to a productive session. If you were unable to attend but would like to be included in future meetings, please contact: kelly.hockaday@manchester.gov.uk

Reading is one of those small pleasures that brings big rewards. Whether it’s getting lost in a story, learning something new, or simply taking a quiet moment for ourselves, reading helps us slow down and switch off from the noise of everyday life. A good book can make us laugh, think differently, or see the world through someone else’s eyes.
To celebrate the joy and benefits of reading, we’re excited to launch our Book Review Competition!
Have you read a book you couldn’t put down? Or one that really made you think? We’d love to hear about it!
Write a short review using these templates as prompts

Your Past. Your Present. Your Future.
To mark Young Carers Action Day, we’re inviting young carers to take part in a creative writing competition.
Write a piece about where you would want to live in the past, the present, or the future – and why.
You might want to think about:
- What that time or place would be like for a young carer
- How support, understanding, or opportunities might be different
- What would make life easier, fairer, or more enjoyable for young carers
- What you would hope to see change for young carers in the future
Your piece can be a story, letter, diary entry, poem, or reflection – be as creative as you like.
This is your chance to share your voice, your ideas, and what matters most to you!
✨ We can’t wait to read your ideas and imagine the world through your eyes ✨

In Manchester we are looking to introduce a play sufficiency model to Manchester, we recognise Children’s Right to Play and as such we are in the process of researching the extent to which children can play. The research will help us understand the variety of issues that influence whether children get enough time to play and help us hopefully secure more resources to improve local play opportunities.
We are particularly interested in hearing from year groups 5 and 6 and year 9 and such was hoping that you would be able to participate in our research by sharing the questionnaires or asking teachers/youth/ playworkers to support children to complete, there is an adults version too.
A big shout out to Varna St Primary who are currently the school with the most responses!
There will be a prize draw of a play bundle of equipment for any school that submits 10 or more responses!
