Dear colleagues,
I am pleased to announce that our new public health risk awareness self-assessment tool, developed in collaboration with the East Midlands Association of Directors of Public Health (ADPH), with special thanks to the East Midlands region, is now available to download,.
The tool has been designed to support sector led improvement activities and can be used flexibly by directors of public health and councils to understand how effective they are in setting their own ambitions for the public’s health and engaging partners to deliver on these.
This forms part of our new offer around health improvement and prevention, reflecting the DHSC’s 2019/20 funding priority for the Care and health Improvement Programme.
Yours,
Caroline Tapster Director, Health and Wellbeing System Improvement Programme

Mental health
The Prime Minister announced extra funding to strengthen and deliver local suicide prevention plans as we welcomed this clear endorsement of councils’ locally-driven approach to prevention and early intervention. The announcement included £600,000 for ourselves and the Association of Directors of Public Health to jointly develop a new suicide prevention sector led improvement offer for councils. We’ll also be pressing the Government to ensure the overhaul of the Mental Health Act is matched by a commitment to invest more in community and school mental health services.
