News from local Labour

Members of the Labour Party have selected Janet Daby to stand in the Lewisham East by-election. Janet Daby is a former LGA Labour Group Next Generation graduate and has served on an LGA Policy Board.

The Government’s small business minister, Andrew Griffiths, was in South Tyneside to meet Cllr Iain Malcolm and Jarrow MP, Stephen Hepburn and to make a direct appeal to firms to grab their share of a new £120m growth investment pot.

Work is now under way on the Taberner House site to bring hundreds of affordable homes to Croydon’s town centre.

The following Labour led councils now have new Leaders – Nesil Caliskan (Enfield), Mark Ingall (Harlow), Chris Hammond (Southampton), Julie Jackson (Nuneaton and Bedworth)

Swansea Council has taken delivery of 40 electric vans, making it the largest electric van fleet in Wales.

Dementia Friendly Cardiff - a movement to encourage and support organisations, local businesses and community groups in the city to become more dementia-friendly will be officially launched this week.

LGA Labour Group - new London councillors' briefing day

The LGA Labour Group will be holding an event for new London Labour councillors:

The day will be a mix of plenary and breakout sessions.  Speakers include:

  • Cllr Clare Coghill, - Leader Waltham Forest and LGA London Rep
  • Cllr Lib Peck - Leader of Lambeth and Deputy Leader of the LGA Labour Group
  • Mark Lloyd - Chief Executive, Local Government Association
  • Andrew Gwynne MP - Shadow Communities and Local Government Secretary
  • Ayesha Hazarika and Marie Le Conte – building up a media profile
  • Cllr Alice Perry – NEC rep
  • Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan (tbc)
  • Mayor of Lewisham, Damien Egan
  • Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz OBE

Please note that this event is only open to newly elected London Labour Councillors elected for the first time on Thursday 3 May 2018

The event is likely to be oversubscribed and will be on a first come, first served basis. The LGA is currently in the process of updating the list of councillors but for now we would be grateful if you could pass this on to new members in your authority.

10.30am – 3.00pm

This session is open to new councillors across Yorkshire & Humber and the East Midlands who have been elected (for the first time) in May 2018. The session aims to enable new members to explore their role and share learning from experienced members. It aims to give new members a wider perspective on the role of a councillor, provides an opportunity meet other newly elected members from across the region, as well as learn about the support available from the Local Government Association. The session is free and lunch will be provided. A full programme will be available nearer the time.

Co-op Party Conferences - Saturday 9 June
